I was an STG in '90s and that equipment they're showing is light-years beyond the 53C we had onboard the USS O'Bannon.

I was an STG in the mid 60's(surface sonar tech), my first ship was equipped with SQS-23, mainly active sonar, a FRAM I with ASROC, & the useless DASH system. Last ship I served on had SQS-26ax, also active, and much more powerful than the 23, and a much better passive ability since it had a very large underwater dome and able to pierce the thermocline with bottom bounce mode, vs the 23, which was small in comparison, and only active/passive modes. I always thought active sonar was a pointer for the enemy saying "HERE WE ARE"! Times have changed and so has sonar gear.

Finally! The video I have been watching for.. My Primary Rating when I first joined the US Navy! I chose this rating because not only did I get to operate our own sonar systems, but were highly trained in water, sound, acoustics etc AND because we also were highly trained and worked on and repair ALL our own sonar systems electronics, weapons systems and fire control systems. I wanted it all and so I chose this rating for that.. And can proudly say when I graduated my classes at FLEASWTRACENPAC, I did so #1 in my class!

You can hear the sonar from miles away and you can have a little fun with the sonar operator by banging on metal using Morse code.

Would love to take a tour of the ASW school in San Diego to see how much the sonar has changed since the 70's for surface ships.

I am a former STG and wow the gear on this video looks like Star Wars compared to the old 26 cx/axr system and 23 pair system i worked on.

I want to make one of these using the SDR type waterfall principle, any info on hardware or software welcome. On my boat, I have to leave the sounder on, or I may hit a whale. I have had one swim into me on more than one occasion.

there is a WORLD of difference between a surface ship ST and a submarine ST (STS).

1:18 so that graph isn't a 360 location plane, but rather a frequency graph?
