Neuroplasticity and learning explained

What is Neuroplasticity and how does it help us to understand the learning process?

For many years, scientists thought that the brain was fixed and couldn’t adapt or change after childhood but advances in fMRI scanning have shown that this could not be further from the truth.

We can now see that our brains change and adapt every day, regardless of our age. Every time we learn something new, we are harnessing the power of neuroplasticity.

You can use the AGES model of learning to improve your teaching.

So is Spacing in neuroplasticity kinda like what body builders do when they allow a day or so in between working specific muscles so that muscle can regroup?

Nothing is more evident than playing a musical instrument. Eventually what seemed very difficult just becomes natural if you stick with it an practice for just 15 minutes each day.

I discovered this concept recently and I find it interesting. It has so many implications. For example, travelling can open your mind to a changing environment and affect your neuroplasticity. Learning new concepts and challenging your vision can affect neuroplasticity. The creative process is definitely the most chaotic process that forces your brain to always adapt to new sounds and creative ideas. Living in a big city and seeing people of all walks of life, straight, gay, bi, rich and poor, immigrants, new languages, artistic people, businessmen(women), etc, definitely improves your neuroplasticity as opposed to living in a rural area, seeing the same people for 15 straight years and never travelling, basically being exposed to a homogeneous environment during your entire lifetime. I'm also curious to know how this concept of neuroplasticity can interact with your political ideas (progressive vs conservative). I have a background in political science and I think that there is enough room for a study in political psychology (how humans develop their political ideas). I'm not going to do that study though, I graduated a few years ago and I'm not planning to go back to uni. haha

I am nursing student and the more I learn about the brain, the more curious I become...
Neuroplaticity amazes me and would love to learn about it...Right now I am looking for a part time work in the neurology department in our hospital to feel this curiousity

Hi, would you mind if I was to use your video in my growth mindset workshops? It's a great explanation of neuroplasticity, and I love the visuals to make it clear for the children I work with. Thanks, Rosey.

What a great video! The word Neuroplasticity can be inviting to some learners and cross the eyes of others. You really explain the whole concept in a concise meaningful way. I would love to provide a link to this video as a resource for some training I am developing for a client. Would that be ok?

Hello, I am a Chiari Malformation survivor, and I had decompression surgery in 2020. I am wanting to know more about neuroplasticity and how it plays out with Chiari Malformation. Have a good day 😃

Hello Mr. Dickson - I was searching for your contact information but was unable to find it. I work for the University of Maryland - Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. We are currently rewriting our curriculum for our Emergency Services Instructor course, which we teach to volunteers in the State who are interested in teaching EMS and fire courses. I love this video and would like to be able to use it during lecture with our students. Would you be okay with us doing this?
