Yes, it was only Finland and, yes, it was only Ireland, but under Lee Carsley England already look more dynamic and front-foot than they have in years. With goals from Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Jack Grealish over the international break, Adam Clery examines how the former Under-21 coach has transformed the national side in just two games.

The fact that Pickford's long balls have stopped tells me everything I needed to know about Southgate

The ‘Lewis understands space and time better than professor Brian Cox comment’ is my f**king favourite Adam quote of all time! What a guy! 😂🙌🏻

I came here to see you talk about Gomes and I'm relieved that he's getting his own video. After the first 5 mins of the Finland match I was in love with the little fella. By then he'd played a couple of those slide rule forward passes which some English fans and even Guardian journalists seem to ignore in preference to an overhit 30 yard diagonal. But these are the unglamorous passes that make you play through the thirds, that give a team momentum in possession. With the energy of Kanté and measured distribution of Kroos. Best England midfielder full debut I've seen since Glen Hoddle. I just hope Gomes gets treated better than him.

Gomes was quietly the best player on the pitch yesterday. He barely put a foot wrong, looked so calm and composed on the ball and off the ball his positioning was perfect

Yesterday’s game was refreshing to watch, the freedom and intuition the players were playing with 🤩. Trent was the standout player last 2 games, but he needs runners which Gordon and Grealish provided. The point is, the XI needs cohesion and balance, instead of forcing the star XI players and doing a really bad job.

I don't have anything to say about the England side that you haven't said much more eloquently than I ever could. Just wanted to say that your videos are a joy to watch. I always feel a little smarter having watched one. Thank you.

Love your videos! I'm American-born but have lived in England long enough to where I really want to understand the game in a deeper way. Your videos do that better than anyone else I've seen on YouTube! So thanks!
Also good luck with the Great North Run! I've just finished a degree at Newcastle Uni and know that run is not easy!
Here's to you and (hopefully) more of Anthony Gordon in international football :)

Whether it was Germany in 2010, or the current Spain, what we’ve lacked in international football is an identity & cohesion. That stems from time spent together at youth level.

What’s exciting is that we now have BOTH a group of players that have caps together at u21, & the same coach (who has his own system).

I can’t wait to see some more of Carsley’s supporting cast - Madueke, Smith-Rowe, Gibbs-White, Foden & Palmer, complimenting what’s being built.

I can't wait for the world cup. The Finland game was epic. I'd downed the better part of a bottle of wine and I was absolutely balls deep in that game what TAA and Grealish floating all around the place with my simple tactical brain trying to make sense of it all

I never considered the players would have freedom of movement.

This is really exciting football that I want to see. I'm not going to shit on Southgate, we need to remember where England were when he took over. So respect.

Great analysis. Gareth Soughgate did a lot of good things for England but clearly was not the best coach and his game management made it unlikely he would ever win anything. Lee Carsley has a different skillset and we can already see what a proper coach and tactician he is. Great start. Hope he gets the job.

In Gomez we finally have a player who can sit deep and actually play a killer pass forward and knit defence and attack together (Wharton is a good shout also) but Rico Lewis really excites me (as a slightly jealous Man Utd fan!) have we seen a player that is as similar to Lahm? whether at rb, lb or midfield he seems so comfortable and has an elite football brain, it didn’t matter that he was right footed on the left because the way he plays and his body position he receives the ball in, it’s a million miles away from the cringe inducing Trippier constantly cutting inside looking so uncomfortable (having Gordon hug the touch line helps massively as well)

watched both games and all of the knockouts at the euros, and england were just so much more fun to watch under carsley, they felt so much more dynamic, fluid and attacking than they did at the euros and both games looked like they were pretty much always going to win, compared to the euros where everything felt very lethargic and unsure, considering how close englad got under southgate this feels like the team and set up thats gonna finally win trophies

10 minutes into the ireland game TAA played a wonderful ball that allowed Gordon to run in behind and that resulted in the first Goal something England didn't do at all against similar oposition in the group stages of the Euros, it took Carsleu 10 minutes to fix Engalnds attack and he did it without 3 of Engalnds best attcking options Foden, Bellingham and Palmer but I think only 1 of them can start in this system

My daughter and I were at the match. Good stuff. TTA played well but his killer pass to oopsy ratio seemed quite high (I've never seen him live before so maybe it always is). I agree completely with your final comment: it's meant to be fun. I'd rather they were all running round with their heads on fire (in a good way) giving it a bash than frowning their way through another straight-jacket season. We'll see what happens when they hit tougher opposition, clearly, but I'm not sure we could have wished for more currently. A relational approach that rewards intelligent, skilful, energetic players: splendid!

2 games and Carsley has already shown more tactical awareness than Southgate ever did... Low standards to beat but still.

5 attacking players who press together, 5 defensive players who defend and maintain possession. The players are playing in their natural position.
