I started walking backwards in my daily walks and it was a game changer for my body. I realized how easy it is to hit hills and I just feel stronger. I love it and my body does also

In middle school I used to run half the mile backwards, I found it easier then forwards. I did that all year long. Then my coach either saw it for the first time or didn’t approve on the performance test. He made me run the mile again forward, I lost my respect for PE teachers after that doing only bare minimum to pass the class. I didn’t see what the problem was I kept up with everyone.

IWT = interval walking training, means alternate walk fast and slow.
Just do that, lots of benefits.

The reason backwards walking has less impact on the knees is because with backwards walking we don't heel-strike (set the heel down before the toes), unlike with forward walking. The purpose of the ankle is to buffer the force of the impact, like a shock absorber, so that the impact force doesn't harm the knee and hip. If you heel-strike, all the impact force of the step goes straight up to the knee and possibly even further to the hip. If you toe-strike, most of the impact is absorbed by the ankle.
Advocates of those "barefoot shoes" claim, we heel strike when walking because of our footware. I am not certain if that is true, but with some conscious attention to how we walk, we can toe-strike even with regular shoes.

I like walking up hill backwards. It feels great! And it’s easier. My only wish, though, is that I would have eyes in the back of my head.

I like to add another simple walking hack... Walk on irregular or non-level surfaces. Engages in many different muscles and improves balance. Of course, wear comfortable, full friction shoes.

The only drawback to wearing safe, comfortable shoes.... our ankles do not grow stronger because they don't have to, ankle strength become obsolete.

Never use stretching for warm-up. Stretching while cold will cause your muscles to tensen up and increases risk of injury. Stretching is for cool-down after the exercises.

When I did athletics in school we had to walk a 400m very fast using the heel and toe method, then run it backwards as fast as we could and then run a 400m normally to improve our time. Early 1970's.
