Since I checked out openSUSE 15.3 recently, I thought it was only fair that I also check out Tumbleweed as well. Tumbleweed is a rolling distribution that's always updated, and is a great fit for people that prefer the "install once, update forever" mentality. In this video, I'll give you guys my thoughts after checking out openSUSE Tumbleweed for the very first time.

Thanks so much for covering openSUSE. As a blind user, this is by far my favourite distro. Orca, a Linux screen reader, used to play ball with GNome, but now it’s god awful and can’t even read the activities window. Solution on most distros would be to install a new desktop environment and remove the old one with some terminal magic and hope you didn’t break something. SUSE? Pick xfce in the installer and have another coffee whilst the network installer sets up your accessible desktop environment, then when on the desktop, alt control t, sudo zypper install orca, password y. Love YaST, but wish that worked with Orca, unfortunately I have to use the command line version over SSH from my Mac with magnification, which is both incredibly useful and better than nothing even though sometimes I’d rather use the App versions.

I still think where OpenSuSE shines most is as a server over a desktop. Things like AutoYaST, KIWI, and OBS make it really easy to customize, deploy, and maintain.

The recommended method of updating Tumbleweed is to run 'zypper dup' in a terminal as the super user

1:40: "You didn't talk about X, you didn't mention Y" Most Linux videos don't talk about X, except to point out that the distro has Wayland ;-)

Excellent job as usual, I enjoy the good with the bad, in the real world, things don't always go smoothly, so it's good that you showed that and that it was worth it once you got past those issues. Hopefully the Devs at OpenSuse will be watching this and already have an updated installer in the works. At least one that you can pick your default style Vid drvr like either an AMD or NVidia package like I have seen others recently like PopOS. Thanks for showing all the positive, very much worth the look with the hypervisor and windows domain features, very interesting

I just switched to openSUSE and I love the installer, it found my old boot root and home partitions all just replaced them.

Never had a single one of those problems because I always opt for XFCE desktop version. The best.

Thx for the quick review. The awful looking install process was enough to force me to look elsewhere.

Nice vid thanks ! Your screen def problem : very annoying and unacceptable indeed ! I'm not an OpenSuse user (just Debian and Ubuntu based distros compatible with Compiz) but do you think it may be caused by Wayland ?
Can you run Xorg instead ?
Cheers :)

Great Thanks for your honest first impressions on Tumbleweed. I tried the new openSUSE 15.3 the other day and must say that it seemed to still have quite a few basic problems, even if it is a beta it doesn't install much confidence in a distro when this happens, however I am sure it will get fixed at some point ?

It has really taken me a while to really understand what the heck the deal was with this distro and why so few people actually touch on it and I realized that it's not exactly meant for desktop users, the DE is kinda there as an afterthought. OpenSUSE really shines in it's unique tools that it has but those tools aren't something an average user needs and thats why I never hear much about it. Pretty cool, but it ain't for me lol

Hi Jay,

A suggested topic for a btrfs video: does it work well with full disk encryption? I've read somewhere that there either were or are issues in this area. IMO - full risk encryption should at least be an option, if not the default when installing an OS.

Awesome video! Will OpenSUSE perform on an atom 1.33 GHz with 2 GB RAM Toshiba Encore II tablet? It is severely underpowered.
