The Caribbean island of Barbados has been a territory of the Crown for centuries.

Since the first European settlers arrived, the island has been subject to British rule.

Though it declared independence in 1966, the Queen remained Head of State.

But this week, Barbados is cutting off ties with the monarchy once and for all.

Always remember how the PM, Mia Mottley, was too arrogant to give the people of her own country a chance to choose whether to keep the Monarchy or not. The latest polling showed that around 65% wanted to keep the Queen. She was scared, so she decided to take the decision herself. Awful.

Hi to all people of, and in, Barbados - from a fellow-viewer in the UK. It is often a shame when change comes, when traditions end and when formal ties are cut. However, on t'other hand, you will now have all your destiny in your own hands which, in 2021, is the surely right way forward. We have many people from Barbados, and of Barbadian descent, living here in the UK and I am certain that Her Majesty the Queen, and other members of the Royal Family, will always have a place in their thoughts for you. So, though formal ties are finally being severed, we both remain in the Commonwealth family, rather than being a foreign country to each other. You have now had independence from the UK for a long while and it seems right you should take the final reigns of your independence from others. I wish you all the best and hope you continue to regard both the Royal Family and the UK as your close friends and international family. Good Luck!

The UK media’s line is this is progress. Really? Is it better, given the venality and corruption of politicians the world over, to have a politician as head of state who, of his or her nature is ambitious for the position and therefore fundamentally flawed, or a monarch who is born to the position so ergo, has no ambition but merely desires to selflessly serve? I know which I’d prefer, and it ain’t another greedy politician!
