Barbados formally removes Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, becomes a republic

Barbados is entering a new era, as the former British colony officially becomes a republic after removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is the first commonwealth country in nearly three decades to declare itself a republic.

The split is amicable though, with Prince Charles also flying to Barbados to watch it happen.

Yes, the reason that the concept of Republic was not put to a referendum was that it was not generally popular. They would have lost. The concept of Monarchy isn't really about political science and what would function best in theory, it is about belonging in a family of countries. Barbados still does belong in the Commonwealth, a grouping that does provide many tangible benefits, all the best in any case with the future.

Congratulations Barbados ! You have done what too many Australians have not had the gumption and patriotism to do after 120 years since federation !
I hope Australia can ditch the British Monarch as Head of State also soon . It is absolutely ridiculous in the 21st century and downright unpatriotic for Australia to still have another country's Head of State as its Head of State.
Until Australia has the guts to insist on an Australian Head of State we are NOT a grown up and sovereign nation in its own right !
