just like humans, they need a certain level of stimulation and activity in order to feel engaged, motivated and fulfilled. If they go too long without that certain level of stimulation and activity, boredom is going to kick in, which will negatively affect their mood.

In this video, we will talk about 7 signs that indicate your cat is struggling with boredom, and we will explain how you can keep your cats happy and engaged with life.

Being destructive
Oftentimes, cats who suffer from boredom show it by being destructive. This is because they want to create their own version of stimulation. They may climb the curtains and destroy them until nothing is left. They may also knock things off tables, shred toilet paper rolls, or stalk small pets like canaries, guinea pigs, and other innocent creatures.
Bored cats can be serious troublemakers. So if your feline friend is looking for trouble, it could be because they are bored and want to entertain themselves.
Over grooming and other repetitive behaviors
Over-grooming is a common sign of boredom in cats, and it may also occur when they are stressed or anxious. They will lick, bite and chew on their skin causing irritation and inflammation.
The irritation that results from this behavior can cause them to continue to over-groom, creating a negative cycle of self-harm and self-soothing. This condition can worsen towards anxiety and depression.
Though, keep in mind that overgrooming can also be a sign of health issue such as skin allergies, parasites, or fleas.
Picking fights with other pets they usually get along with
If your cat starts running after the other cats in the house or tries to corner your dog, this may be a sign that your cat needs some stimulation.
Your feline friend may even lash out at you too. This aggressive behavior can escalate quickly so it is best nipped in the bud.

Demanding Nonstop Attention
When your cat walks over your keyboard while you’re trying to work, or stare and meow at you nonstop even when they are not hungry, it is a sign that your cat is bored. Cats who are bored try to seek their owners’ attention by excessive vocalizations and attention-seeking behaviors.
Excessive sleeping
Cats usually sleep a lot. However, if your cat sleeps an overly long time, they may be suffering from boredom or depression.

It may seem harmless, but it is not. Cats need mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy, happy and content.

Excessive eating
Excessive eating is another sign that your cat is bored.
Keep in mind that eating out of boredom is also a very "human" trait. Many people with anxiety and depression suffer from the same harmful compulsion.
Lack of normal curiosity
Cats spend a large portion of their day napping, but they do have times of the day where they engage in activity and play. If you notice that your cat isn’t doing much else except lying down and snacking at the food bowl, you could very well have a bored cat on your hands.

Battling Boredom in Cats

If you notice any of these signs in your cat, it’s time to create an environment for them that will keep boredom at bay. Here are 5 essentials to keep your cat happy and stimulated.
Spend time with them
The biggest key to success is quality time with your cats.
Oftentimes, the most effective way of keeping your cat happy is to just pay attention to them. Snuggle with them, play with them and pet them every day.
Pets in pairs
Although there are cats who prefer to be alone, most cats enjoy each other's company, especially if the introduction is done well. Having a buddy to play and interact with can go a long way in keeping indoor cats stimulated and happy.
Bring the outdoors… indoors
Do your best to bring in the things that make up the outdoor experience, things such as scratching posts, places to climb, spots to hide, or high places with good vantage points. Make sure there are window seats where your cat can get some sun and watch the world go by.
Engage Your Cat’s Hunting Instincts During Mealtime
As a loving pet owner, it is our responsibility to provide our feline friends with an environment that mimics their natural habitat as closely as possible.
Instead of putting your cat’s food in the same place each day, consider hiding a few food pellets in different areas of your home. This will encourage your cat to hunt for his food, which will keep him occupied while you’re not home.
Food puzzles and cat toys that can be stuffed with treats or kibble for your cat to find are also great games to bring out natural feline behaviors and entertain your pet.
Some cats like puzzle toys that you hide treats in because it lets them use their brain, their teeth, and their nose.
Use Cat Interactive Toys
You also need to have interactive toys that allow cats to carry out components of the predatory sequence, including chasing, stalking, catching and biting.

My cat likes to play hunting. I put my hand behind a wall or something else and she stalks, does those moves, runs after it and usually jumps over it but sometimes also touches it and she's ready to go again. She gets distracted easily though.

My indoor feline sleeps a lot, so that indeed might be a sign of boredom. At least she is active hunting undesired insects, and enjoys social interactions with me, including cuddling and grooming.

That is true. I tried this experiment by putting my kitten in a carrier, equal distance from his food and water bowl and to myself. My kitten will come to me first, jump in my lap, then his food and then come back into my lap, then to water. Then he will just bolt and expect me to find him. He is bored. After he gets chipped tomorrow, he is going outside.

My cat doesn’t meow loudly after moving in with me again (which took time to get permission for after I moved). I will take it to the vet to see if it starts meowing in protest under transport.
