Women have served in the United States armed forces since the Revolutionary War. Women were first eligible to join the North Dakota Army National Guard in 1973. By the middle of that year, there were four: Pfc. Marie Derwin, Pvt. Donna Axtman, Pvt. Victoria Eisenzimmer, and Pvt. Delillah J. Heck (mother of Retired State Command Sgt. Maj. Derek J. Heck). The nation’s first Air National Guard female pilot was 2nd Lt. Marilyn Koon from North Dakota. Today, women serve in every career field in the North Dakota National Guard and are critical members of the team, representing both the Army and Air Force's highest values.
