If verb tense allows you to control the past, the present, and the future, then aspect gives you even finer control over time. David, Khan Academy's resident grammarian, explains.

Grammar on Khan Academy: Grammar is the collection of rules and conventions that make languages go. This section is about Standard American English, but there's something here for everyone.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

I didn't know khan academy had also made videos on English, but the emphasis on the "perfect aspect" shown in the video helped me have a clear picture on tenses, which I never had before.

Never seen a better explanation before! This really helped in my board exams too

Great video. I was trying to understand this concept to be able to teach it to my students but every other video was mixing in several other aspects of grammar and making it unclear. Thanks for the focused, short, and sweet!

So is it
I walk = Simple
I am walking = Progressive
I have walked = Perfect
I have been walking = Perfect Progressive
But isn't there a habitual aspect?

What is the difference between "I have washed the dishes" and "I washed the dishes." They both seem like complete actions to me.

Do you also refer to "broken" as the past form of break?

Thanks for a useful lesson! However, I don't like your phrase, 'Before the time I'm mentioning, this action was already completed.' It confuses students. I instead prefer, 'By the time I'm mentioning, this action is already completed.'

The now only exists in one's mind as a memory which was then. The requirement that all forces are transmitted from the past rules out now (instantaneously) as a natural law construction. Perfect is not in the cards for animals.

What is the difference of " i will have been washing" and " I will have been washed" ? Thanks

1t 1:07 it is the past participle that comes after present tense have. And not the past tense even though it is the same in this case. But with irregular verbs it would be : "I have broken the dishes"

Why didn’t you mention that when we use the perfect aspect not only can we use the perfect aspect with something completed, but we can also use it with something that is not completed yet? For instance, this time, last year I had lived here for 3 years or I have lived here for 4 years now, or this time next year I will have lived here for 5 years.

Is it about a particular time for example, mum asks me if I washed the dishes in the morning, and I will tell her that I have washed the dishes? Is that how it works?
