Is AI going to replace web designers?

Read an excellent article in Science Focus magazine about AI. It stressed that AI is only as good as its data, and it is limited in terms of what we call thinking. While it can do things much faster than a human, and handle much more data, it cannot really think as humans think. It's only as good as its code, and AI has no self awareness, no emotions to express; it can't think like humans think (The possibility of something like Star Trek's Data is far into the future, if at all). While some scientists think AI will never be able to think like humans (never say never), it is true that we are a long way from duplicating what the human brain can do. The brain processes information in an extremely complex way, and in fact, we still don't understand exactly how the brain does everything it does. Imagination and spontaneous creativity is a human trait. The article stressed that the more realistic point of view is AI will be a tool to help us reach beyond our limitations, but it will be a human's mind that decides how the tool is used, and human imagination and creativity that will expand AI's use to improve the human condition, create meaningful art, and explore the world around us.

It’ll speed up workflow and help but no, AI will never replace any creative or problem solving jobs. Maybe making complex work more accessible. So we can all do better work but it won’t do it for you.

Also what if there’s a bug or do something wrong, only people who understand how to do those jobs can fix or work around it. Like automation, if you don’t understand the components your in trouble trying to fix it.

As for websites specifically, AI websites have been around for a while and they’re not even in the top 20 platforms when it comes to market share. It’s probably farther away than you think.

Paul, great seeing a video. While I haven't incorporated AI into my web production YET, this video has definitely urged me to begin looking at what options are available and incorporating that into new designs.

There will always be people who either think it's all way too much, rocket science so to speak, don't have the time, or just don't embrace the AI thing and can't handle it. That doesn't have to mean the end.

But designers can take these tools to learn and inspire. At the very least, you shouldn't bury your head in the sand and rather ask yourself - How can I use the new technology for myself and become even better as a result?

I think we are seeing the beginning of something magical and scary. We are in the initial stages of what AI can become. Just like any other technology from the past, we must adapt. New jobs will be created around AI. We must continue to learn and improve ourselves. In the meantime, as you said, let's take advantage of this new technology for our benefit.

I am pretty sure in coming decades our jobs will be lot easier as people who are not into website designing or app development, they will need us for implementations. If AI does it all, then I am already implementing AI to my company from now. I want to learn neural engine + AI + ML + Data Science to save my earnings for future. LOL. Lot of work ahead.

Thanks Paul for this introduction and presentation! I think in terms of ideation, these tools are incredibly helpful. Whereas I realize that you can also quickly get lost in this world, because it is addictive to see more results... However, there are already hundreds of thousands of designs / templates, so it's not the choice. It is more the wise and conscious selection of appropriate elements, colors and content, which continues to be a challenge. Regardless of the technical aspect, loading speed, maintenance, extension...

Over hyped, eventually yes, but we are years away. However I strongly believe those who learn to work WITH AI instead of not or fearing it will win.

I’m surprised you didn’t try out the programming side of ChatGPT, which can write some usable code like JavaScript and CSS. Its still “learning” and there are often mistakes in the code, but 95% is a pretty good stepping off point.

Also, I’m impressed with the grounded responses and acceptance from your fans here. The FUD, lies and knee-jerk reactions from artists on other channels, is mind-blowing to be honest, considering the vast majority are using the massive advances in tech over the last 10-15 years to even consider a career in the creative arts. I grew up where even the best of the best illustrators were very low wage earners. Look up Disney and Hanna-Barbera animators. Literal slave shops.

Since design and design language are always dependent on the cultural context, which can be different even across national borders, and design is supposed to solve problems and simplify things, I don't think AI will replace web designers in the near or not so near future.
The said problems are just requirements for legal minimum requirements, market and target audience, etc..
AI will not be able to take over this.

There was a very interesting article I read by a barrister in terms of copyright infringement with AI generators. Some of the images that these AI engines gather are not always copyright free and therefore it leads to a important question in terms of copyright infringement

I remember when google became popular. They said that you can just google the answer. Not so long we will exhaust what ChatGPT may give to us and we'll be looking for something new again. By default, humans think all the time. Nothing hardly competes against that. Not any AI.

I work in some marketing agency ... Last week the owner of agency has introduced to us a "Chat gpt' ( if we already knew about it ) and we stopped using a copywriter and contenwriter service's ... I'm 100% sure that a lot .. a lot of people will lose their jobs ... 😒
