If you are familiar with Merphy Napier, I'll tell you this. She read One Piece and thinking it was just fun pirate adventure. That can be casually read for fun.

But after she finished Skypiea and get to this part, she realized how each island might be connected and the previous arcs matter. So after this, she then Rereads back from the start upto this.

She said in her words, "There is casual reading and there is One Piece reading". She describe One Piece as fiction with intentionality in each details. She basically hyper focused more on background details or clues after this arc.

Looking back at that moment really makes me kick myself for not seeing it's significance until much later in the series. I would argue it's far more significant when caught up. Trust me Timberz, you're not looking too deep into this. One Piece's worldbuilding is indeed immaculate and it never ceases to excite us.

The main reason a lot of people see this arc as filler (or at least filler adjacent) is because during your first watch, it feels VERY removed from the rest of the story. I was one such person, because while I knew this arc wasn't filler, it originally FELT like filler to me at the time. Think about it: it had a lot of the trappings of a lot of filler arcs in other anime. You travel to a completely new place, encounter a group of bizarre new people with bizarre powers, and at the end of the arc, it seems like there will never be any payoff to almost anything that happened in this arc. It feels a lot like filler, especially because it's sandwiched between two of the best arcs in the whole series. It's an arc that becomes much better in hindsight and is much easier to appreciate if you're watching One Piece on morw than the surface level where you're just watching for humor or cool fights

In my humble opinion, I think the biggest reason some people say the Skypiea Arc is a filler or its the worst arc or its trash is because some of the new one piece viewers just rush to catch up with the anime. They literally just either skim through the important details (which is a lot in Skypiea) or they just have a blank mind until they see Action scenes. We gotta remember that One Piece in its core is an Adventure Manga so all of the fights/action scenes are just a buildup to the story of a Young Pirate wanting to look for the One Piece.

Every Straw Hat is essential. Zoro as Luffy's first mate helps Luffy with tough decisions, Robin can read the Poneglyphs, Nami is the only reason they even make it to the next island, Sanji takes care of all of their culinary needs, Nami literally wouldn't be around right now if it weren't for Chopper. Robin is essential but so is the whole rest of the crew and that's what makes it a crew. Luffy wouldn't have a shot at being Pirate king without Any of them.

I feel like Robin explained herself pretty well when she joined. Luffy made her live when she wished to die. She had nowhere to go and no one to go back to. So Luffy took responsibility and agreed to let her join before reassuring his crew she wasn't a bad person.

In the same episode, she says she has been on the run since she was eight, and has been surviving by joining up with various rogues and allowing her to get closer to her goal of finding poneglyphs.

The point Luffy made a lot of time is that luffy dont have a chance whiout any of his nakama to find the one piece, he cant sail, he cant cook, he is not serius, he cant read poneglyphs, he cant sing, he cant drive the ship, he cant repair the ship, he's no doctor and yes... he cannot lie.

Yeah it is insane how some details are so importent and are brought up after 600, 700 episodes again. If you watch one piece back to back its not that crazy but its been several years between these episodes (or chapters) when they released. It is so good how engaged you watch every episode i didnt do that because i was still a child when i started watching but i bet it makes it 1000 times more fun.
