Undercurrents by Robert Buckley

MusicWorks - Grade 5
Undercurrents provides an electrifying, virtuosic showcase for the whole ensemble – featuring a series of solos, duets and trios, as well as highlighting the various chamber sections within the band. The music was inspired by watching schools of fish and flocks of birds perpetually moving with the ocean currents and air currents. Every once in a while a single solo shape will appear – or two or three – they dance apart for a moment and then are drawn back into the ensemble. Commissioned by the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, Victoria, BC, this is a powerful tour-de-force from beginning to end.

Robert Buckley really doesn't care if his low brass dies or not (or literally any other section)

Love this piece! My Kindergarten band is playing this at their spring concert!

Never in my years of living did I think that I would rather just listen to music instead of seeing it as well. Well done Robert, I am going to blow my brains out.

Robert Buckley found out about 16th notes and time signatures and wanted to show us how many time he could use them 🤸‍♂️🚆

As a ninth grader I've gotten the honour of playing, albeit not performing, this amazing piece with my school's senior band. I rehearsed with them shortly after the music festival where they performed and won gold with this piece. For a string bass player like me, this piece is extremely repetitive (we get no solos and only ever play the chorus bit), but it was still exhilarating to play it with such skilled musicians (and give myself a sprained wrist from the position switches)

I love the parts in songs where only woodwinds play together

When I was a junior in high school, I thought this was insane and was afraid of playing this at All State. Now, I have played Maslanka’s Child’s Garden of Dreams and can safely say this is nothing compared to the things I’ve seen here.
