Parallel Session 73, Optimisation methods for analysis and design of roof structures (WG 13)

Lasse W Rahbek, Poul H Kirkegaard and Umberto Alibrandi (Aarhus University) present their work on parametric grid mapping.

This paper presents a parametric grid mapping design tool for freeform surfaces. The tool can create optimized grid topology in regard to multiple objectives. It is proven that that the tool can create optimized gridshells with membrane behavior even when being affected by horizontal forces, and also when adding aesthetic objectives in a multi-objective optimization analysis. The tool uses a modified genetic algorithm (GA) where each individual’s chromosome in a population is repaired by a novel Kinematic Stability Repair algorithm called Rule Based Kinematic Stability repair (RB-KSR) to improve the performance of the GA. The RB-algorithm adds or removes elements to ensure that every grid in a population is kinematic stable.
