How could they not know there was something seriously wrong? The brakes must have been making so much noise

I have actually seen this a couple times, one where the owner was stuck in their drive with the brakes locked on( the pad had jammed between the disc and caliper mount. The other had lost the pad on the piston side and was wearing on the face of the piston.
Neither were from cheap servicing but rather the owners hadnt had the vehicles serviced at all

I remember that VW I think it was, where the discs were virtually gone, must of been a good light show at night...lol
