As a math teacher I can confirm this is exactly what I feel inside when this happens in class. And on top of that, they did not even simplify into the lowest terms!

I just make a common denominator. The add and reduce. 1/2+1/4. 2/4+1/4=3/4... Am I right or I just fill a measure cup up and see what it give me lol

However, it can be proven that if you add the numerators and the denominators like that, the number you will get (2/6= 1/3) will be BETWEEN the two original fractions!

i think it would be 3/4, but, i honestly don't know how i was taught.. like, if it were any other fraction, id definitely be lost.. help?

So without paper and pen. What's 1/3+1/4+1/5 =😊 a 90 yr old man told me only 2 people gave him the correct answer in 40 years. As he kept talking I said give me 10 seconds of you not talking. I then gave him the answer. He was shocked. I was the third person in 40 years. Hint, what's the common denominator???
