How to get an Apartment in Berlin - Life in Germany

In the last 5 years, rents in Berlin have skyrocketed, increasing more than 100% in such a short period of time. The government has been trying to move against this development with very little success. Not enough new apartments are being build and the market is getting overheated by an increasing number of citizen and foreign speculators.

I got my room inside the freaking sbahn circle after 1, 5 months of living by a friend in their washing machine room on a mattress, I got an email by automatic filter in wg-gesucht at 23:00, no picture of room, no concrete address, but a phone number (jackpot!). Called immediately. My future roommate was almost asleep and said she posted that just 15 mins ago. I should come tomorrow morning or three days later. (Yeah sure) So, even though I had exam week and slept over in university, (we have a dirty couch) and next day was also the first day at my new job, I squeezed my exhausted self at 9 am through the door of my future 12 qm room.

There is a shortcut! (Speaking from experience) You can repeat step 6 and 13. After doing so for few months, move to Brandenburg and tell all your friends you live on the outskirts but it's fine cause you have quick connection to the center by S2. Losing a will to live will happen gradually but at least you don't have to live on the streets. Still not recommend this way though 😂

So true. Affordable and available housing has become a global problem in most big cities. In Sydney a lot of people are moving rural or far away from their home in order to afford a decent place to live. And that's really challenging if you grew up in the 80s-90s and got used to having a backyard, space and a dog. Then you have to fight just to get a shoebox, let alone a house.

Once upon a time when I studied in Berlin after begging enough I had found a place to live in a shared apartment. I moved in, but never got a contract. A year later they kicked me out, but the rent was at least cheap. :)
