‘Boy Meets World’ star shares diagnosis to spread awareness

Danielle Fishel, best known for playing Topanga Lawrence in the 1990s sitcom “Boy Meets World,” revealed her diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ, a noninvasive form of breast cancer.

DCIS, which affects more than 55,000 women per year in the United States, is curable. Fishel, who said her cancer was at Stage 0, urged other women to get their mammograms, or breast cancer screenings, to catch any issues early.

According to the American Cancer Society, “nearly all women” with DCIS can be cured with appropriate treatment and medical care.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, DCIS accounts for up to a quarter of all new cancer diagnoses each year. Modern medical imaging technology has made it possible to detect DCIS, whereas it would typically go undetected before and could in some cases turn into invasive and deadly forms of breast cancer. But routine mammograms can and do pick up tens of thousands of new cases per year.

I didn’t know stage 0 was a thing. I assumed it started at stage 1

I just turned 40 this year and got one done. It was clear, but with a sister who died of cancer before age 50, it's important that I got it done.

In 2018(30 years old) I found the tumor myself, after a biopsy it was declared stage 0. But after the OP they found the cancer had already spread and it went up to 3. Got chemo and radiation and am cancer free since then. You most likely find a bigger tumor yourself but the small starting onse only with a mammo and regular check ups.

Anyone old enough to get a mammogram knows who Topanga is. 😂 I named my bird after Topanga 😅

Sharing her diagnosis is a super good thing! The fact that she caught it so early is encouragement for women to do regular mammograms!

One thing I always remember when I was a kid was a small paper on the inside of the medicine cabinet above the sink that depicted step by step how to check yourself. I'm glad my mother never had to deal with that.

Same type of breast cancer I had, but before surgery, it broke out of duct. Still tumor was about 1/2 inch. Lumpectomy, four rounds of chemo once every three weeks followed by 16 rounds of radiation. 7 years cancer free.

Got my screening done after my mom was diagnosed. Thankfully my mom’s cancer was caught early and has responded well to treatment. Get your screening ladies!!
