having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card 😎

"Don't ever apologise to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologise to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. The most important thing is that people read." - Neil Gaiman.

Also as a librarian I just wanted to say thank you for supporting your local library! ❤️

I agree with everything you said, I’m also a library reader, but I usually buy the books that I’ve really really liked because I want to support the author. If they created something that moved me, I feel the need to give back.

I can't be the only one who prefers paperbacks

This was a great discussion, and I love what you said about reading being a hobby that is accessible to everyone! Also, you've inspired me to use my library more! I currently live away from my home library, so I only use the Libby app for audiobooks. But as soon as I move back, you KNOW I'm going to my library with a shopping cart! Thanks for the video, Cindy ✨

I have a lot of love for physical books. I smell them, I stroke them, I rearrange them, and when I feel bad I stand in front of my shelf and remember all the awesome reading experiences I had and can always go back to.
That being said I was mildy anxious to watch this video, expecting to be made feeling guilty-
Instead I laughed, nodded, smiled, liked, subscribed, commented and (most importantly) found two new lovely people!! :)

Ahh! I seriously love this video. Thank you for the shout out. I just wanted you to have a copy of the books that you loved so much. I seriously relate so much to your story about growing up. I grew up with limited money and learned to utilize the library at a very young age. Now, I only buy books when I find crazy deals and I really want them, otherwise I use the library and through talking to you I have decided to use the library even more. Libraries seriously should have more love on booktube, not only do the inspire the love of books they also help the community tremendously. Unfortunately too few people know that you can preorder new releases from the library and not have to spend money on a book. There are many other ways to get your hands on a book, legally of course lol

I buy second hand books...i get them dirt cheap and it is so much fun to be able to afford a number of books for a fraction of their prices! I am not gonna lie, i am a huge collector and i do think that my childhood influenced that...

My parents were really amazing with money and i, in turn, also never really bought much stuff except for books! It was my birthday gift and new year gift, etc. And since i grew up in India, the books were never that expensive. And the price of classics was even lower! Specially compared to the page count! So, i basically grew up with Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Austen, Bronte sisters, etc. Since i was never buying contemporary books, i wasn't spending a ton of money.

And now, when i don't live in India anymore, i buy second hand books and am able to have a good collection without breaking the bank for it.

All that being said, i loved this video and really appreciated the point of view. It was refreshing and true!

I buy books once in a while, but 95% of my reads are from the library, which saves me thousands of dollars a year, so I can eat, and (more than) occasionally travel.

I've always wondered why book hauls are never from the library.
As readers we should be supporting our local library.

how did you manage the perfect balance of being serious and poignant while still memeing it up

I recently discovered a second-hand book store where you can get a really popular book in hardcover for like EIGHT DOLLARS. And also, almost every week they have sales where select books are only a dollar. Needless to say, it's my new favorite place.

You are so right about this. The pressure is deffo the negative thing.
I basically agree with everything that you said. Reading should not have barriers to entry apart from being literate!
"Lets be real 0 effort too". G... it doesn't matter because you're engaging and I rate this a lot.

I do library hauls all the time. Im a librarian so its easy to get my hands on it. My bookstore sells coffee and when i go for coffee I do browse the books but i take pictures of the ones that i think would be good then go to the library and get them. Also, im on a budget. I feel like im also going to waste money if i don't like it. Im not a big rereader but the only time i would buy them is if i absolutely loved it and will reread it. Libraries are life!

As someone who hauls 40+ books a month, I came into this video confused but your reasons make so much sense. Our childhoods can impact us in so many ways. Honestly I'm so glad you are happy with the 4 books you have. For me I've always been a collector. I've collected so much in my life as it makes me so happy which now includes books Haha! This video is a great dicussion and I agree, who gives a damn what other people do with their money as long as they are happy? 👍

I LOVE getting books from the thrift store, and honestly, sometimes you can find some really really really cool books at a thrift store too!

It's crazy because before watching/starting booktube, I never really felt the need to physically own any of the books that I read. After seeing all these people with their pretty hardbacks and gushing about book mail all the time, I kinda felt left out. Sometimes I'll watch videos and see all of the books on their shelves and feel bad because I don't and never will have the amount of books that they've acquired. Although now I've started to purchase more books, you will never catch ya girl paying full price lol. Goodwill, book outlet, and other places that have bargain books really come through for me. But yaass Cindy I need more Ted Talks from you💕

I can't stress this enough but there is nothing wrong with using the library. The last thing I want is for people to feel pressured to buy hundreds of hardbacks when they don't have the financial means to do so or when they just don't really need to.

Personally I like collecting books but I don't go out and buy fifty books every week just so I can "fit in" or whatever. I buy like 4-5 books a month tops and that is enough for me. When I first discovered booktube I did hop on the trend and I was buying every book that was being recommended just so I could have huge hauls and huge bookshelves etc. but after a while I sat back and looked at my shelves and realized I literally didn't like most of the books, and my hype for some of them had fizzled out and it was pointless to own them. I had a huge unhaul last year and I got rid of over a hundred books. right now I still own just over a hundred books but they're books that I love and I see myself re-reading multiple times.

I don't use the library very often because it's far and it just never has books that I want and I borrowed a book like 3 years ago and I never bothered to return it and returning it now would be...embarrassing to say the least. But that's the besides the point, utilise libraries!
