Reporting on whether James Webb Space Telescope May Have Just Detected Alien Life at Exoplanet K2-18b. Either we found a new chemical process we've never run across before, or we found alien life.

We should make sure that whatever Message we send them it should not begin with two unskippable ads

124 light years you say? Let’s send Katy Perry to investigate.

Waiting for the Anton video saying “it’s not aliens, because it’s never aliens”

"The aliens might taste good" is such a human thing to say.

I hope alien life can be confirmed within my lifetime.

First ever filming of a colossal squid and a realistic detection of alien life within roughly 24 hours. What a day for science!

There have been so many false alarms that I’m going to remain extremely skeptical.

My favorite "It Might Be Aliens" moment was a headline a few years ago about a detection of some chemical in an exo-planet atmosphere that we wouldn't expect to be there. The article said something like "it could be a sign of alien life but then again it might just be a sign of some really strange, sustained chemical reaction." And my thought was "That's pretty much what life is, a series of really strange sustained chemical reactions."

The lack of oxygen in K2-18b's atmosphere could also point to a "Great Filter" - if this is a biosignature, then it comes from a world where photosynthesis never evolved. That could mean that the development of photosynthesis is a great filter, a hurdle along the route to advanced, interplanetary civilizations that is incredibly difficult to surmount. Which is good for us, because it means we DID beat that hurdle, and the odds of the great filter being something like a future technological disaster we haven't crossed yet goes down.

I live in the UK, read about this last night and immediately came here to get the JMG take. Thank you so much for releasing this so late in your time zone for those of us who have been waiting :-)

It soothes my blackened heart, knowing there's other life forms out there suffering right along with us.
Let's all raise a glass to another life form, not paying taxes to live on their own planet.

12:39 Hell yeah, this is why I follow this guy. John is LOCKED IN lol. I love the visual of him hearing the news and just goin on a deepdive of research and developing a video on it while much of the world sleeps. Thanks for staying on the cutting edge man

Woke up and this. I'm speechless. Hope we can study this planet more.

There is so much out there. It’s like Yogurt thinking what’s outside the fridge.

Unless I'm missing something, this would be an extremely exotic lifeform! DMS and DMDS are both created by phytoplankton via photosynthesis. But the data is also showing no oxygen. Is the oxygen output so low that is can't be detected, or is the DMS being created by non-photosynthetic life, since they'd also be creating oxygen? How would they create DMS without creating oxygen? It seems like no matter the answer, there are gonna be some breakthroughs for chemistry from this planet!
