There's a new version of Android on the way. Android 12L is a small update on phones, especially Pixel phones. But it's the biggest change for Android on large displays in a decade, as Google looks to reboot Android tablets and make the big-screen experience on foldables even better.

Google making Android more tablet friendly is good and all but I doubt they would have done anything if it wasn't for Samsung. It seems that Google only ever does something in response to Samsung and Apple these days

I do hope that this can path the way for more custom-developed Android Desktop Mode. Sure that we have the likes of Samsung DeX, Motorola Ready For, LG Screen+, and Huawei EMUI Desktop, but it will be great to see more Android smartphone brands embracing that kind of feature.

Samsung is the way to go for Android tablets and they're already doing a great job with DeX. I don't know how much of a value add this is going to be ..

Android 13 will be extra interesting now. I expected a polished android 12 which don't get me wrong would be lovely but.... Android 12 L took care of that. Now 13 can focus on features and providing more design overhauls/ options for customisation.

It comes as no wonder as to why did Samsung's Dex beat all it's rivals

Samsung did more for Android on tablets tha Google, it's a shame that Google is just focusing on tablets now, iPad OS is way more optimized than android, I hope it'll change soon

The rounded corners split screen is unnecessary

Maybe it's just me, but the task bar at the bottom feels deeply uninspired. I'd love to see something that isn't just a giant grey bar. I do like the way the gesture bar morphs into the task bar, though.

It wouldn't surprise me if Google has written a lot of the new code using jetpack compose. The problem with fragments is that not many developers used them. Android has had really good support for scaling to different screen sizes since honeycomb, but implementing it always took a bit of effort. Jetpack Compose makes this a lot easier. It's a part of the puzzle that needed to be put in place in order to get developers onboard. Google doesn't do things like threaten developers with delisting if they don't write large screen versions of apps like another manufacturer I could mention .

My first Android tablet was the Samsung Tab S7+ and I love it. Dex mode makes it become a laptop, and while app support may not have all the major things people want, you'll still find what you need I think. I use it mainly for entertainment though, so movies, games, and music. I like to draw and do some art stuff with the pen too, but I'm not artist myself. So the Pen Up app works just fine for me.

I don't like some of the little things Google does, like the rounded corners on multi-app. It makes no sense for that, and on my S7+ I really find it just annoying they kept it. I had hoped Samsung would maybe reduce the effect or maybe make it customizable. I like sharp clean edges, but rounded stuff like this doesn't make sense. Maybe when phones have rounded corners, like some shown in this video, since it blends naturally with the curve of the screen, but not for a tablet with 90 degree edges.

Though it's a minor gripe, I do hope more people develop for larger display sizes with the release of Android 12L. I don't care if Android doesn't take over iPad really, but as long as people like Samsung put value and effort into their tablets, I'll buy them now.

This has been long overdue. I don't understand why it took them so long to improve the tablet experience. Hardware has improved quite significantly and they're only doing it now.

This is exactly what ipads need too.
I want the new tab S8 ultra SO bad, and had no idea 12L was even a thing. This would definitely be game changing.

Android 12L might be the biggest update to Android in history. It has the potential to be the best hybrid OS, something that runs on phones, tablets and computers. Imagine taking a phone, you fold it and it becomes a tablet and then you dock it and it becomes a computer; the hardware exists but the software wasn't there. The closest thing we got to this was Windows 10 Mobile.

Finally some attention to the tablet side of android so that tablets can be put to better use and hopefully be an alternative to chromebooks

The issue with Android on Samsung expensive Galaxy Tabs has been glaring. Samsung must be pleased finally they'll be able to deliver a decent Android UX on their otherwise great tablets.

Preordered the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+. I am very excited for this. The reason I bought the tablet is because I am used to my LG Ultra-Wide Display at home. Whenever I'm on the go with my Dell XPS, college or work, my multitasking options seem lackluster whenever I'm used to having 2-3 windows open. My Galaxy Tab S8 is definitely going to help with that.

Personally, as a Galaxy Z Fold3 owner, I'm looking forward to Android 12L. The phone's multi-taking options are already decent, but am all for OS enhancements to help push app developers in that direction as well.

wow. its been a while since Android done a .1 lol. Last we seen that was with Android 8. Android Oreo was the last of the Android 1.1 something and now Google is focusing on tablets and foldables? Well they need a new tablet and foldable ASAP!

I can't wait for 12L on the S22 Ultra especially cause of the faster customization of wallpapers.
