Portugal as been doing that for a long time. I recall in a particular region it was a 3-in-one, problem solver. Wild fires, wolf extinction and a breed of native shepherd dogs also threaten with extinction. Goats (and sheep) were used. The goats clear the vegetation, the shepherd dogs guard and protect them, from the wolfs. Wolfs are not killed by farmers, because there's no deaths in the herd!

So wolfs are protected (from farmers), by keeping them out of harms way, while not approaching or attacking the herds!
Those big shepherd dogs won't go extinct. They eat almost as much as a human and without a "purpose". People didn't kept them.
The herds help prevent wild fires, while providing good meat, milk and cheese and in the case of sheep, wool. Cheese in particular being a specialty of the region, reaching quite decent market prices. Reactivate another branch of the regional economy, that was almost forgotten. Oh! And it also created a few additional jobs, shepherds. Which haven't been seen for a long time.
Talk about a win win situation! ;-)

People should get more goats and less dogs as pets. If you get tired of it you can at
least BBQ a goat . dogs are pretty worthless these days
