When it comes to replacing brake pads, several factors need to be considered, including compatibility with your vehicle and the value for your money. For certain cars, like older Volkswagens, there are brake pads designed for vehicles with wear sensors as well as those without. In this guide, we’ll explore how you can purchase brake pads with a sensor and easily remove it if your vehicle doesn’t come equipped with one.
Choosing brake pads with a wear sensor might seem like a convenient option, especially since these pads are often available at a lower price compared to those without a sensor. However, wear sensors can sometimes signal that the pads need replacing prematurely, leading to confusion and unnecessary changes. Therefore, removing the sensor can be a practical strategy to avoid these false alarms and save money.
The process of removing the wear sensor is quite straightforward. First, it’s essential to prepare adequately by ensuring you have the necessary tools, such as a screwdriver and pliers, and by working in a well-ventilated area while wearing protective gloves. Once you’re ready, lift the vehicle using a jack and remove the wheels to access the brakes. After unscrewing the brake caliper bolts, you can take out the worn brake pads.
Next, you’ll need to locate the wear sensor connected to the pads. Using a screwdriver, you can remove the retaining clip and disconnect the sensor from the wires. Carefully extract the sensor from the pads, taking care not to damage the friction material. Once the sensor is removed, you can proceed to install the new pads without a sensor into the brake caliper, reassemble the caliper, and tighten the bolts. Finally, put the wheels back on and lower the vehicle.
In conclusion, removing the wear sensor from brake pads is a simple and beneficial operation, especially if your vehicle doesn’t come with one by default. By always checking the specifications of the brake pads, you can ensure compatibility with your vehicle and enjoy optimal braking performance without incurring excessive costs.
