Apple Maps vs. Google Maps: Which Is Best in 2024?

Google Maps is the most popular Maps app with over 1 billion monthly active users. But with Apple Maps slowly catching up, is it worth using instead? Here's my take.

I need a maps app with the elegance and simplicty of Apple Maps, with the data of Google Maps and the community of Waze.

Recently Google Maps added the ability to Ask Gemini when reading info of places, I used it a lot when on vacation hiking with my older grandma, I could ask maps if the location was good for older people or had paved trails.

Google Maps absolutely owns Apple Maps for data. Google Business Profile completely dominates in this regard. But, Apple Maps has come a long way, and I prefer Apple Maps for walking. For public transportation in Europe, things vary a lot city by city. I've used both a ton in Lisbon and Porto, and both are pretty good. Again, Google seems to have better data, while Apple Maps does a better job of presenting the routes. Also, I really appreciate the direction reminders on my Apple Watch. I think a lot will depend on where you travel.

IMO Apple is better at shorter more casual commutes. Their walking and biking directions have more details. Google Maps is better at longer trips and offer more detailed driving features. Overall Google Maps is the better app for driving. With more features to keep your drive moving and much better search.

I will say that since I mostly drive places and I live in the U.S.A, Apple Maps is more than enough for my use case. This boils down to what you need a Maps app to do for you. I also find that I have a TON of favorite places saved via iCloud in my Maps for easy access ( I am HORRIBLE at navigation)! haha. For me the main UI of Google Maps is too confusing to use and to straightforward at all. In Google Maps, your favorite places is sort of hidden within a sub-tab menu bar which is annoying to me. In Apple Maps, your favorite places are front & center, which for me, works out so much better!

Personally i use Apple Maps for public transit, at least in Madrid (Spain) it works way better that Google Maps and it’s more reliable.

I use Apple Maps just because I live in the US and I try to limit my interactions with Google as much as possible. That being said if I’m going abroad or doing a long road trip use Google maps. Then delete it from my phone when I’m done.

Apple Maps all the way for me my friend. What i do is I triple check my destination and then i put it in my maps. I like it more for design and easy to use interface

Google maps has a very very cluttered UI and i miss my turns alot when their are lets say 2 left hand turns 100ft each other.

Also when I use Google maps with Apple CarPlay, it marks the location of my parked car.

Great video. Personally, apple maps app seems more "fluid" to use, definitely a nice well designed app but it'll never beat google maps active data. More people using = better data. Theres many times i use apple map, and construction detours are never caught. Whereas construction detour, in my city, are immediately changed on google maps. Even though I have Iphone, i still use google maps.

And like you said in the video. Its super nice to be able to just search whatever product and it'll try it best to look for it near you. 90% it works very well for me

Apple Maps has better turn-by-turn navigation and a better design. Google Maps has better raw map data points of interest when busy looking at the map. Traffic data is better on Apple Maps as of right now. Google used to be king on that too, but not anymore. Keep in mind Apple is literally going all over the world and re-mapping all of these countries, which takes time. I wouldn’t judge them until they have finished remapping said country.

Mafic Earth and Tomtom Amigo, for driving. Both use OSM, amigo has the excelent tomtom RTTI.

You can only use Apple maps on the iPhone. There for Google maps wins hands down.

I'm still waiting for apple maps to become as powerful as google maps and it keeps not happening. I was a long time user of apple maps but i went back to google maps about six months ago and I was actually blown away by what you can do with it now compared to a few years ago. Its like it knows everything, which might be slightly concerning lol. I do avoid google services as much as possible because of the data concerns, but I gave in to google maps because its just far superior in basically every way. Maybe one day Apple can get to that level, but they need to do a lot to get there. Google has a ten year head start on them after all though.

I have an IPhone and I prefer Google maps. Google been there before decades, has much larger data pool to draw from. Much better

If i have to use a map for driving directions, I'll use apple maps. Dont give a damn if it takes longer or faster. I hate HATE HATE how google apps or waze gives directions. Apple maps will tell you to turn at the next light, not say, "in 1000 feet turn left". That is just the dumbest of dumb of dumbs. i'm trying to be nice.

We mostly use Waze? Better police cam and traffic cam locations
