Resident Evil 4 changed the video game industry in a multitude of ways. It revitalized a stagnating series and won countless awards for it's innovative gameplay. Resident Evil 4 is one of the most influential games of all time, and is considered by many to be the best game ever made. With Capcom releasing a remake for this iconic title in just a few months, that begs the question: Is Resident Evil 4 still worthy of that status it had in 2005? Well, I am here to discuss what made RE4 such an excellent game, as a relatively new fan of the series.

The creepiest part of the game was watching the credits after you've had your fun killing all the Ganados. At least Leon ended their suffering, but man, Saddler suddenly became a much more hated villain for me

The variable difficulty system in RE4 is one of it's best features that doesn't get enough appreciation from people.

“Sadler, you’re small time.” Is honestly my favorite part of the game! Lol

I remember I tried this game for the first time a year ago, I couldn’t really get used to the controls so I didn’t really get into it. Back in May of this year I tried it again and was hooked, it’s now definitely top 3 games of all time for me.

I'd like to point out 12:56 because someone made a game entirely based on RE4's inventory system. It's called Save Room and it's like 2 bucks at most on Steam. It's a short game but if you love the inventory system, you'll feel right at home. (:

I played it on gamecube in year of release when I was like 15. I grew up watching my brother play the PS1 RE games and RE4 was the first one I played myself. I remember seeing clips of it from dvds that came with gaming magazines I used to buy. I was so hyped to finally play it.

Top to bottom masterpiece. Prime candidate for the greatest game of all time. An endlessly replayable, never dull, gluttonous feast of gaming genius, crafted by experts.

I wrapped up a run a few weeks ago. Hyperbole doesn't even begin to approach just how well this game comes together. RE4 is underrated if anything, It belongs in some non-existent hall-of-fame on how to absolutely perfectly fucking nail the whole gaming experience.

im currently finishing my first playthrough of re4 right now, and its crazy just how much stuff is in the game, with it being a gamecube title and all

I remember back in the day, my Mother and sister went to Iraq and my other sister and I had to live with our Father (not the best times of our lives). My Mom was always the one who bought games, so while she was gone for 18 months, I barely got any new games to play. Then when she finally came back (salute to our troops) she began to bombard me with new games.

She had bought me this game, and it had been so long since I played a RE game (Veronica was the last one I played til that point) that when she got it, I had forgot that I was actually a fan of RE so I left it in my pile of "unlikable games". Then one day, I ran out of games to play so I figured "Ehhh well, I dont remember Resident Evil being all that good, so, guess I'll play this to fill the time". Went in with very low expectations. Started playing... an hour went by... 3 hours went by.... 5 hours went by... next thing I know I was thinking Was Resident Evil ALWAYS this fun"???? lol. This game brought me back to the glory of horror games.

Lol my favorite line is when Saddler is going on about Leon becoming his guard and Leon says "Unfortunately I'm going to have to decline your generous offer. I have prior engagements". The way he says the last bit always gets me

I have nothing but praise for the Switch port. The portability is very handy 💙💙

You should try Haunting Grounds. It's another game that arose from the RE4 project.

0:38 As someone that did grow up with games that were wayyyy beyond his age, I kind of have an idea of how personally I managed that.

As a 5 year old that shared a PS2 with his brother, the games I tended to play the most were platformers, but I did step on games like Devil May Cry (the goat), Metal Gear Solid, GTA, and it was all thanks to my brother... kind of. He was legally an adult when those games released, and would buy them for himself to play, yet he really tried to make sure I wasn't playing those games and would hide them constantly, but like any kid would do, being told not to do something just made me more curious about them, and would end up playing those games way more than I would have otherwise if I was simply left to my own devices. I was also incredibly good at hiding what I was playing from my parents if my brother happened not to be around, so whenever I even as much as heard a noise, I would turn off the console and quickly switch towards something, and go like "Haha, I was just switching games". I think they knew about what I was doing, but I have never really asked them about it, and it's almost 20 years later, so I doubt they even remember about that.

Losing progress constantly was a real threat when doing that, but with, for example, DMC, missions took literally only a few minutes to beat, so I could just catch up once it was safe For other mature games, I would just save constantly and either get really good at them, or fail a lot. By 2005 though, when games like DMC3 and MGS3 released, my brother kind of gave up on hiding the games and just accepted that I was a criminally curious kid, and kind of understood in a way what I was doing, as he also would have done the same at my age. So basically, my own personal experience with playing adult rated games as a kid was literally "Got lucky with an adult brother, and was very cheeky when it came to playing them".

...Also, nice video! It's not like I have seen it fully yet, but I know it will be a good time.

Resident evil 4 was a game i never played as a kid but my brother did own a copy of it. I personally wasn't a fan because it was a bit scary for my taste.
Now as I'm older now i actually really like Re4.😁 I consider this a masterpiece.

I really hope you tackle the spin off of resident evil like the chronicles games and the revelations series. 🙏

Taking into consideration all the different video games I've played since the mid 90s, RE 4 is still one i would put in my top 15 or perhaps top 10 of all time games that I've played. I've replayed it countless times and the atmosphere along with level design just hits the spot for me. There aren't that many games i can replay years later and enjoy, but this one is an exception. Most of the games i rate above this have had a huge impact on me and some have impacted the entire gaming industry (classic doom, halo ce, duke nukem 3d/64 etc). As for ''hidden gems'' that deserved a sequel i would say metal arms glitch in the system. That game is also something i rate highly. Only horror survival/action game i rate above this would be dino crisis 2, but it's close.

I recently completed Re4 and when you get used to the controls after like 20 minutes the game holds up to this day

I remember being on deployment when I was in the USMC and someone brought a GameCube with this RE4 copy. It was awesome but everyone wanted to play halo instead. Heard from some geeks and gamers that this game was the best that the 2000s could offer. Started playing it and man did I missed out! It’s truly a masterpiece ☺️😌!

They retroactively explain Krauser and Leon's backstory in one of the chronicles wii games but yeah it was odd how this game just... treats it like that story happened when it didn't.
Idk just odd, maybe they knew they'd explain it eventually and decided to just make this game treat it like he WAS a returning character so it didn't feel odd if you retroactively knew this character's backstory?
Farfetched and maybe reading too deep into but it's pretty weird regardless.

RE4 is one of those games that have the distinction of being "genre defining" and that says a lot about a game that came out during a generation with a plethora of genre defining games! It's just of those games that simply can't be ruined by remakes. Lastly, great vid J, it's been a great year with you, so looking forward to the next one!
