I had a good friend back in the early 90’s named adrane who we use to DJ parties with. One day he took me to his brothers house for a bbq and I saw all these belts and pics of a fighter. I asked him “who is this person?” He told me it’s his brother “mike the Hercules weaver”. Mile is an amazing person. He looks mean as hell, but very friendly. We actually talked for a long time that day about this very fight and how close he came to beating Larry. I got a chance to hold one of his belts and took several pictures with him. Sadly I lost contact with both when I left for medical school in 1996.

Holmes was knocked down by Weaver in that round, definitely incorrectly ruled as a slip ...

Curiously this was Holmes's only title defense at Madison Square Garden, as the majority of them were held in Las Vegas NV or other locales. But I think promoter Bob Arum had something to do with that being that Larry was signed with Don King at that time. As the old saying goes, "Great champions aren't always great, they're just great when they have to be". That was Larry on this night, suffering from dehydration and flu-like symptoms. But he got the job done and finished off Weaver. Larry Holmes, all time great champion. 🏆

I remember this fight...not taking anything away from Holmes (he was one of my favorite boxers) but Weaver was a BEAST!!
