The Hebrew word for firmament is raqia’ (rah-KEE-ah, רָקִיעַ)12. It is usually translated in one of two ways—either “firmament/dome/vault” or, “expanse/sky/heavens”1. The word derives from a verb that means “to flatten”. It is a mistake to take the Word of God and try to fit it into the "science" of the day. It is no different than trying to fit the Word of God into the "science" of evolution where we end up with Christians saying "maybe that's how he did it" when He clearly said how He did it. There are several Bible verses that say the Earth does not move and the Bible says that God caused the Sun to stand still for Joshua. It does not say that God stopped the earth from rotating.

If you say the firmament represents both outer space and the earth’s atmosphere together (and that is correct) then how in the world can you place the waters simply above the Earth’s atmosphere? If on the second day, the waters were separated to create a firmament, then that would also include the blackness of outer space as well and not just the earth’s atmosphere. That means the waters above encompasses both outer space AND the earth’s atmosphere. So to me, on the Second Day, when the earth was surrounded by water and darkness (God did not originally create it that way but it BECAME that way) He commanded the waters to separate so that He could stretch out or extend the Darkness. With the waters ABOVE leading the way, the Lord stretched out the darkness, which formed the firmament. Then He made an upper and lower chamber within the firmament. The upper chamber to house the sun, moon and stars. And the lower chamber for the birds to fly in and all living creatures to live in. So the waters above do NOT represent some water dome that existed and then fell down to the earth to cause the flood in Noah’s Day as some Christians wrongly teach. The waters above the firmament still exists and serves as a barrier between the 3rd Heaven (God’s realm) and the 2nd and 1st heavens, which is the natural world that has been contaminated by sin. How do I know the waters above still exists? Because Psalms 148:4 says so.

The bible doesnt say anything about water vapor. I would say that there is an actual body of water above the firmament. Genesis 1 6-7 and god said let there be a fermament in the midst of the waters. And let it devide the waters from the waters. And god made the fermament and devided the waters which were under the fermament from the waters which were above the feemament. and it was so.
