I think the goal back then is to just start an EN branch and see the response, hence they aren't really strict. However they literally pick the best 5 people to start with, which is a miracle. In my opinion, to this day Myth is still the best gen they ever produce, the girls just work so well together and they truly feels like close friends.

Hololive has become big in Japan. Having a strict audition just comes naturally with progress.

They probably get 10x the number of applications now too, so its harder to get noticed without clear signs of talent like past streaming experience, singing ability etc

What Gura herself doesn’t know, she is a big part of the reason it is more strict now. Guaranteed they want to find the next version of her that explodes even far beyond her senpais. An insane amount of Japanese people literally worship this shark not to mention her own English speaking side.

What made Gen 1 EN the surprising success was that each member specialized in their own way that pretty much covered all bases of general entertainment.

•Cali is well versed in music industry prior to hololive. Rap being her primary genre was a nice twist to the group.

•Gura, the meme lord of internet culture with a clear understanding of their general scope of entertainment.

•Ina handles the artistic side and is the source of the cool tone in contrast of the other members. (Takos might disagree on that.)

•Ame specializes in the technical side as well as most collaborative with direct audience engagement. She even managed to debut fanmade 3D before an official 3D unveiling.

•Kiara has actual experience in the idol industry prior to Hololive and is the bridge between Multiple cultures, and works in conjunction to Cali.

I think Hololive has always liked quality over quantity and they've always looked for something different in each talent to bring to their agency. Same with they don't seem to pressure their talents with their schedules. They're had their mis-steps but it really seems like Hololive has really learned from their mistakes and just seems like a nice, supportive agency to work under.

in short, they have raised the bar for the auditions. hope gura could stream regularly if her situation is now better than before.

I am kinda impressed by hololive's hiring staff on how they only had less requirements back then but still managed to hire the most talented group in myth...

I don't think they're are being strict, they are just looking for people who can handle the life style. As Kiwawa pointed out, you have to be mentally tough and have certain self awareness among other things.

I'm just glad Gura auditioned when she did. She changed the vtubing world in a way nobody saw coming. HoloEN Gen 1 set a standard no other company could replicate, and even Hololive hasn't had the same explosive release since.

Being entertaining was probably number 1 on the list for recruitment for EN 1. Good singing and speaking JP were probably nice to haves.
Nowadays if someone has a niche area that they can appeal to which isn't already covered and are highly entertaining I would see them getting hired an individual who may just be good at singing or can speak JP in addition to English.
