Do black holes 'bleach' cosmic history? | Christophe Galfard

According to renowned physicist Christophe Galfard, physics can’t explain our universe - yet.

Steven Hawking's protege, Christophe Galfard, says there are only two events in the Universe that defy the laws of physics: black holes and the Big Bang.

And while scientists try to explain them both, black holes may be eating up crucial evidence that helps explain the Big Bang. That’s not the only difficulty with understanding where our universe came from. There’s another fundamental problem, known as the "information paradox." The paradox says that gathering more information on a given topic doesn't necessarily tell you how it came to be — they are two fundamental different events. So even if we had all the data currently being sucked into black holes, we might not be closer to understanding how the laws of physics emerged.

And that, says Galfard, is the ultimate goal of physicists: to understand not just how the universe works, but why it works the way it does, and how it came into being. The much sought-after "theory of everything" would solve these problems and give us a complete understanding. But are we close to that theory?

❍ About The Well ❍

Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life’s biggest questions, and that’s why they’re the questions occupying the world’s brightest minds.

So what do they think?

How is the power of science advancing understanding? How are philosophers and theologians tackling these fascinating questions?

Like Alice looking in the keyhole and only seeing a glimpse of the garden, I believe we are only looking at a small glimpse of the full truth.

I love content like this! Thanks for breaking down big complex ideas like black holes into bite-size, digestible videos!

Fascinating explanation! But why do the blackholes exist in the first place? Do they exist just to destroy or is there any other purpose to them?

So you’re saying the Disney movie “The Black Hole” is more accurate than we realize
