I asked permission of my wife’s father and step father as they were both very important to her.

I'm a mum from across the pond and the love you show when you talk of your daughter is truly heart warming, our daughter got married this year and our now son in law asked my husband for his permission and I know how touched and proud my husband was of that.

Unfortunately my father-in-law passed away before my wife and I started dating. I never had the chance to ask him for permission. I did however ask her Mother for permission who is a God fearing devout woman who deeply loves Jesus. She happily said yes. I'm very thankful that the Lord blessed me with an outstanding wife who loves the Lord and I'm so lucky to have a mother-in-law that I get to have a close relationship with.

As a girl who grew up with parents who encouraged and supported me while also encouraging me to be mindful of who I bring into my life I love this description of the tradition. It’s not that Dad won’t let his daughter marry who she wants; it’s that Dad will offer that sense of objectivity to confirm that his daughter has remained true to her values and made the right choice for HER.

Oh man this was heart felt, I’m not even a father and it brought a tear to my eye.

That means you were an absolutely awesome father in raising your daughter in such a way that she trusts what you say and what you think

I remember when you started talking about her getting married. I cried. I wish my biological father was still here, but my dad stepped up. The only down was Covid took a lot from so many. My husband asked permission. To take care of me. It's about respect. Nick, you're a handsome soul, strong & honest. Your family is wonderful. I wish there were more people like you. 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

I asked permission when I got engaged. Both my daughters told them they had to get my permission. It's about respect.

I asked for my father-in-law's blessing and got told I was an idiot for believing it made any difference what he thought.
We had 33 wonderful, successful years together before she passed away, but I never won that man's approval.

My husband and I raised our granddaughter. Anytime she went out on a date, the boys asked permission and came into the house to pick her up, and we asked questions of him. One young man came and hung around with all the rest of her friends to get to know each other. A month later he asked my husband and I for permission to date her. She was already 18. He asked my husband for permission to marry her, and he showed me the ring and asked if I approved of the ring. My husband walked her down the aisle, and she had a father papa dance and a father daughter dance.

My husband asked my father and I am so glad he got the opportunity to do so. Even though we had a short engagement my Dad died before the actual wedding. One of the last things I talked about with him was about the flowers we picked out.

I asked my father in law. Not because of anything other than I wanted to be respectful and I wanted him to grant me the responsibility of taking care of his daughter

My wife expected her father to ask me some hard questions and make me sweat a little when I asked. It made me kind of nervous. The coversation lasted all of 2 minutes and was a breeze. My wife was disappointed. We've been married 14 years now and have 4 daughters. I hope the men they choose will show the respect needed to ask me.

Our daughter asked our future son in law to ask her Dad for our daughter's hand in marriage in 2009 & my husband said a calm "No." She still had 2 years left on her college education which was an investment & she needed a good education prior to making that commitment. So 2 years later Daddy said yes but to get premarital counseling prior to planning their commitment to marriage. Then it would be okay with us as parents. 2011 they married & had already built a strong foundation for their future. She is now a school teacher & he has a solid career to be able to provide a firm foundation for marriage. Now we have a grandson & we occasionally watch him while they have a weekend away together to spend quality time together to strengthen their relationship!! Married now almost 14+ Firm foundation in their relationship!!

I did the same, except my wife's father was deceased, so I asked permission from her oldest brother, Ronnie, whose approval I greatly valued because of the kind of man he was. Ronnie has himself since passed away, but that moment meant a lot to both of us. We became very good friends even though we were in-laws...Now, by God's grace and 32 years later my wife and I are still together. I couldn't have made a better choice! She is my treasure!

It shows respect and humility. I was nervous when I did it. My father in law loved sitting in the other seat and having me be the one that asked him.
