We keep forgetting about one, non-obvious ally that the US and the rest of the US allies have there. Everyone forgets about India. There are constant fights between the Indian and Chinese armies on the Indian-Chinese border. India is the biggest threat to China in this region. India has a larger population than China, and the Indian economy is growing at a breakneck pace. India is a good partner for the Western world because it is a democratic country. In the long run, in this region, China will have no problem with American influence but with Indian strength.

I was in Yap (Fed States of Micronesia) in 2015. The locals told me that the Chinese were trying to persuade them to allow them to build a bigger airport and start businesses there. My tour guide told me that they knew that they thought the real goal was to make an airport that could handle Chinese warplanes.
