Let’s go to SPAIN (Via Speke) for one of my absolute favourite Tudor Christmas carols. Ríu Ríu Chíu is a lively and imaginatively worded carol depicting Christ’s Nativity and the immaculate Conception. The meaning of the words “Ríu Ríu Chíu” remain ambiguous, but the word “ríu” translates to “river” in Catalan and many believe that the phrase is set to mimic a birdsong. Its style has such a huge contrast in pace and style to much of the renaissance Christmas repertoire and I think it is just WONDERFUL. I hope you do too! ♥
