Roger, I’m a hvac service manager for a company in the Dallas area. I am so glad you made a video on this topic. When we hire, we follow one mentality; hire for attitude, train for skill. A bad attitude that doesn’t fit our mold ends up a cancer before you even know it. We show them our way of treating our customers, our company, and other techs. We have made more bad hires than we would like and have grown much stronger from it. Keep doing what your doing and hope to see more of your trucks on the road!

I remember dealing with a plumber who I hired to fix the toilet plumbing for my house and he noticed there was a septic tank still connected to the drainage system. I didn’t even know it was there as the real estate agent said nothing about there being a septic tank. So he really went beyond and did me a solid and closed the connection and got a guy to check over the tank itself to make sure there wasn’t any more problems. Turns out the septic tank was close to full and would have caused problems. I ended up paying the plumber extra plus bought him a beer or two.

I work for a large company. We have had our share of bad ones. If the apprentices will be trained to watch for bad behavior and be willing to tell someone when they see it, that will shorten the employment life span of the bad ones by at least half.

Always wanted to be an electrician, so I got addicted to Electrician U and other electrical YouTube pages. When I ended up in plumbing instead, I was worried there wouldn’t be any videos to watch to learn on my own time and to better understand how to be a good apprentice and eventually a good plumber. I am so glad I found this channel!

Amber has been a gem at your office. She helped explain to me the steps going on for our job and what not to do when we left Dallas. I was super happy feeling like I had an expert in amber not just a csr I'm afraid to watch past the hiring steps you do cause I know the headaches of hires and exits of hires are stressful.

As the Director of Service at the company I work for this is spot on. It makes me appreciate the guys I have all the more. Nothing makes my day easier then knowing my guys are in the field and doing a good job. The BS meter is a big thing for me. The minute it turns on my ears slowly turn off.

I am in the Computer Repair business, but I can tell you there is a lot of crossover here for hiring good technicians, the best hire I ever made was of all things a 17 year old kid who wasn't even in collage but I hired him as a favor to a friend and all I had him do was organize, clean, and manage the front desk for walk in's, but man did that kid take it seriously, the first thing he did when he showed up is he perfectly organized all of our spare parts and created an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of types and quantities and updated it daily we still use it to this day, he was great with walk in's and even knew enough to give them a good time frame of when we could get to their repair. That kid still comes by and I have told him multiple times that if he is ever down on his luck and needs a job to not hesitate to let me know. The worst hire I ever made was I had a guy literally fried the entirety of a $10, 000 server and lost all their data, luckily for me the small business owner knew me personally and only made me pay for the server replacement and i had to install it instead of all of the damages and that the data lost was mostly back up files and handful of projects that had backups elsewhere, when i looked at the guys application since after that colossal screw up he of course bailed, i found that he had in fact lied about his work experience i called all his supposed references and none of them had records of ever hiring the man, that was a lesson i will never forget.

I do it myself. That's how I avoid hiring bad folks. I've made that mistake about 22 times over the past 3 years. I'm finally catching on

On communicating with the office. Two of my new bosses joined us in Aug. One is the creator of a popular plumbing service app / software. I’ve been using the app to communicate my job status with the back office. His business pattern got so mad that I don’t call the office every time I finish a job. I talked to the office lady today and she’s like you don’t have to call me, I can see on my computer and GPS. One of the struggles of have three bosses and learning their styles.

I'm in the electrical trade and we had a guy that the company hired that was supposed to be this big shot that was going to bring in tons of business. So he starts his own crew of guys and only does the work he gets and its beneath him to do trouble calls or work he hasn't gotten the company himself. So this goes on for like a year. His crew of guys is like a revolving door they just keep coming and going. None of them can put up with his attitude so it got to the point that he only has 4 guys that will work with him! He still walks around like he owns the place and no one can stand the guy. He's completely oblivious to it all and im sure he thinks that everyone wants to be his buddy.

All of this applies to any technical position with customer facing duties! Love it. Gotta tune that BS meter 😝

I really do have every intention of not becoming the bad plumber as you have described. Starting my schooling for it in May! What I would give to learn from ya.

the hit to morale cannot be overstated, if the good tradesmen always have to pick up after the bad tradesman.

Roger great question for you. I want to hear what you have to say about a plumber who does his job right 100% of the time, is a master at the trade, can do anything and always gives the customer exactly what they paid for as they should and also is a great leader with the other co workers but thinks he can do whatever he wants throughout the management side of the company as you mentioned about the bad plumber. This is a hard question since your talking about an individual who could make your company look great with his attitude towards customers and work performance as well as be very profitable, but hates your guts as the owner and is not afraid to let you know that personally. I feel as if you have had an experience like this before. Please let me know !!

The hotshot has been a problem at every plumbing company I’ve ever worked for.
