🧑‍🎨 Family travels from capital London to central Canterbury. Riding TFL rail/tube to & fro meant an extended visit in & out of Saint Pancras International Station -- which houses the famous Harry Potter train platform 9 3/4. High-speed train arriving blends into High Street trek ambling. Main stopovers included the Beaney Institute, West Gate Towers, Pilgrim's Hospital, Chaucer's Statue, St. Agustine Abbey, St. Martin's Church, Queen Bertha's & King Ethelberht's Statues, Franciscan Gardens, Canterbury Cathedral, Memorial Gardens & the Old Weaver's House for dinner along the River Stout. Concludes with a nature reservoir overlook from our high-rise flat in Woodberry Downs. Chapter titling channels the Chaucer classic, "The Canterbury Tales" and feel free to ignore any stray UFOs or avocados. 🪴Put the 'Can' in Canterbury🌳

🏚 At the heart of this exploration is Canterbury Cathedral -- Seat of the archbishop of Canterbury, the spiritual leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. In SE County Kent, it's one of the oldest Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. Formal Title: Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ, Canterbury.
Founded in 597 and completely rebuilt 1070~1077. East end enlarged early 12C and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following 1174 fire -- with extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket -- archbishop murdered there in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late 14C when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.
Before the English Reformation, the cathedral was part of a Benedictine monastic community known as Christ Church, Canterbury, as well as being the seat of the archbishop. {WikiPedia}
