Aliens versus Predator 2 is a science fiction first-person shooter computer game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Fox Interactive for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X computers in 2001. It is a sequel to Aliens versus Predator (1999); both games are based on the characters of the Alien and Predator media franchises as well as the Alien vs. Predator crossover series.

An expansion pack titled Aliens versus Predator 2: Primal Hunt was released in 2002. A "Gold Edition" of Aliens versus Predator 2 followed, combining both the original game and the expansion pack into a single package.

Like its predecessor, Aliens versus Predator 2 allows the player to choose one of three characters: an Alien, Predator or human Colonial Marine. Each character has different objectives, abilities and weapons at their disposal. The single-player campaigns present the player with conventional series of levels that are designed around the abilities of each character.

As the Colonial Marine, the player uses a number of weapons to combat Aliens and Predators. The Marine wears armor for protection, and uses an image intensifier, flashlight and flares to improve visibility in dark areas.

When playing as the Predator, the player uses a variety of weapons from the Predator films such as wrist blades, a throwing disc, and shoulder-mounted energy weapons. The Predator is more durable than the human or the Alien and can survive falls from greater heights than the human. It can use a cloaking device to become invisible and several different modes of vision to help in the detection of enemies, including infrared vision and a mode sensitive to electrical systems. Unlike in the previous game, the Predator in Aliens versus Predator 2 recharges its energy supply using a personal item.

As an Alien the player can explore most of the game's environments freely, even climbing across walls and ceilings. However, the Alien has no weapons and must use its claws, tail, and jaws to attack enemies. The player can also use a form of echolocation in dark areas and can detect pheromones to discern human or Predator enemies. The Alien can drop from any height without injury and is the fastest of the three player characters.

Actually the Predator player character is not a young hunter at all. It's a veteran Predator prince. You are the Predator that hunted Rykov in the past. It's clear when you read the various datapads in the complex after your capture.

Predators are not killing machines like the marine. They are hunter. Hence the limitation on the weapons. You're supposed (lorewise) to kill them all with your claws, and trophies out of each corpse. This way you show your skills and honor, and prove why you're a badass among Predators.

Predator gameplay against humans is about stealth and precision. Ambush the humans and one-shot them in the head, either with the speargun, the spear or the glaws. The plasma weapons are more fit to deal with the aliens.

Back to my first point, the Predator you play is a highly skilled veteran badass prince. Notice how some of the Predators giving you new weapons kneel to you. At first you are here to hunt. Then you are here for revenge and regaining your honor. By being captured and particularly having your mask stolen, you lost your honor. Then you get to the killing machine part because you're not here to hunt, you're here to clear your path through whatever stands between you and Rykov. It's why at this point you get weapons like plasma cannon and plasma pistol.

Nice review, keep up the good work and AVP love :)

The best single player campaign out of all Aliens/Predator games by a mile. The writing was top-notch, and the way the campaigns intertwined with each other to tell the story was a staple of the early Monolith games.

"Its devoid of humor" What about in the start where you hear a guy over the comms "That better be a boot. Tell me thats a boot." and you expect shit to go down and then you just hear him say "Hey! Its a boot!"

+Gggmanlives "I'm sure most people buy these games for the Marine campaigns"

Can't say I've ever encountered anyone who bought an AvP game on the strength of playing as a Marine. The sections are great don't get me wrong but there's a reason the games are called Aliens vs Predator, we're in it for them.

I fuckin hate how hard it is to get this game running on a modern PC. I wish it would get a re-release.

The thing that I love about this channel is that he, unlike a lot of YouTubers who review games, even the big name channels like IGN, point out both the good and the bad things about the game. Even when there isn't a whole lot wrong, he still points it out.

AvP2 multiplayer was the best back in the day. Alien was my fav race. You could launch yourself across an entire open map in just a few well placed leaps, then quickly tear marines apart with your bare claws. If my memory serves me correctly, after some kill streak threshold you would turn into an alien queen and wreak havoc, able to take and deal massive damage.

I would rather play this than Aliens:CM

The Marine campaign gets progressively better because you get more powerful and fun weapons. My favourite is the Grenade Launchers with the robotic spider-like bombs which jump at enemies who get too close. The last mission is the most fun when you jump into an Exosuit, fight your way into a hive, kill the queen and have to run away from Praetorians.

The multiplayer was just the most amazing thing back in the day. So many hours put into this game. All the skins and different levels. God I miss PlanetAvP.

This is the best Aliens vs. Predator game, in my opinion. I tried the new one, this was better. I tried Classic 2000, this one was WAAAAY better. I didn't even finish the first mission I tried.

I strongly recommend everyone who liked this game to check out the "Under The Hunters Moon" mod for it, which is esentiallly a new Predator campaign that is based on the 2004 AvP movie. It's very well put together in my opinion, I would definetely prefered to see this version as a film.

I actually liked the Predator campaign, because of the progression. I also liked the added challenge as it still seemed that the predator was way overpowered and having pretty much permanent invisibility was an easy way to get through most marines. However, most of the fun that I got from this game was from the multiplayer. I'm surprised you didn't even touch on that. The different modes and maps were so extremely fun and allowed for so many strategies to win. I really do think that was the best part of the game.

Forgot to mention the best part of this game, probably not playable anymore, the multiplayer. There was a mode where everyone started as marines and as you died you turned into aliens. You were scored on how long you stayed human by seconds. This mode was played for years after release and was so much fun. Thee were even map mods made for it including a full copy of LV426. Games could last for a very long time or just a couple minutes. I really miss this game mode, truly a fun multiplayer experience.
