How To Use The Mixolydian Mode - Playing With Modes #1

We are starting a series on modal playing! The purpose of this series is to help you see the modes as individual scales with their unique flavors.

In this video we are going to explore the mixolydian mode. The mixolydian mode belongs to the major box and we will start with getting comfortable with the mixolydian scale shape in the CAGED system. To accomplish that we need to sing and internalize the sounds of the scale.

Then, we will start improvising, targeting every note and analyzing how that note feels. This helps us anticipate the sound of the note and establishes a strong connection between our mind and what we are playing.

Mix and match different scales systems like CAGED and Three note per string to maximize your melodic options and come up with your own custom shapes.

Once we finished this exploration phase we need to concentrate in the musicality aspect. For this, put you guitar down and start singing then, translate that to your guitar.

The other thing you can do is adding rhythm to your story inspired by actual speaking phrases.

Finally, use the knowledge you previously acquired to enrich your improvisations with concepts like playing the arpeggios over the major scale, using the pentatonic scales "hidden" in the modes and incorporating the minor pentatonic scale over a mixolydian backing track.

Barry, please don't feel that your musical life is over. You are never too old to learn new things. I am 58 and stopped playing about 15 years ago and sold my guitar. I bought a new guitar a couple of months ago and have made lots of improvements by watching videos and practicing backing tracks. I am still putting modes together and when I plug into the amp it opens a whole new world. Thanks to people like David Wallimann it is easier than ever. I hope you find new inspiration as I did.
