How Long Do Crocodiles Live?

Crocodiles may be ancient animals as a species, but how long do individual crocodiles live?

The question of how long do crocodiles live is complex for several reasons. Because crocodiles live a long life the study of their lifespan is something that often runs for longer then the career of the person studying them. Captive crocodiles are often not a great source of information as until recently they were often caught from the wild and their age was unknown.
Add to this the fact there is 23 species of crocodilians all with potentially different life spans and you can see why "How long do crocodiles live" is no simple question.

Interesting how these animals are so famous, but so little is known about their biology. Hopefully lots of young people will stay involved with zoology so one day we can get a definitive answer!

I talk about the alligator at my zoo I work at a lot and always have a fun talk about their age and the nuance of it besides our general lack of knowledge. However our guy Norman is at least 80 years old and still going strong.

Interesting that they can outlive the people keeping the study on them. l guess they live a long time and until someone takes the time to properly keep the data going as you say maybe in another 50 years we will know. Basically have one and expect it to outlive you in some instances LOL.

There is no limit . They dont age like humans or other animals there is no limit. They also can go up to a yr without food and dont get energy from food they get it from the sun. Cheers

I remember some of my textbooks claiming lifespans in the centuries based on people finding healed gunshot wounds with rounds still in them that hadn't been used since happened but...well, if they are anything like humans the shot would have deteriorated over that time and most likely poisoned the creature in the process and I know for a fact that every textbook I could remember the name of and look back up was chock full of not-so-factual "facts".
some species of whale and shark have been attributed with 2+ centuries that way too but it's a lot more believable since a harpoon has a lot more mass to it in a much more long-lived material than a bullet...still reading it in a body of work I regard with less trust than the proverbial tabloid though.
