The Chaotic Race to Monetize Space Garbage

Currently it’s estimated that there’s over 170 million individual fragments of space debris in low Earth orbit. This debris is taking up valuable real estate that’s in high demand and limiting the ability to launch new spacecraft. Which is why the next space race is all about...garbage.

There's no money in cleaning.
The same reason our ocean is full of trash.

Thanks for bringing back my fear of a random piece of space trash bashing my head in from the sky

I recommend watching the anime Planetes. It's literally about the daily lives of garbage men in space.

As long as one of the collection vehicles gets named Toybox, I'll be happy.

There’s a Netflix show called Space Sweepers with this as the premise.

Clearing our space highways is such a great analogy. Which is more important, LEO or the various Le Grange points and their routes?

Very interesting! I trust that all the genius in our world can master this problem now that there's enough money in it for them.

Make a satellite that holds a series of varying weights that are sticky, shoot them strategically on an object in an effort to change it’s trajectory

6:45 i don't think power consumption for such a nobel cause shouldn't be fretted about as long we have crypto mining and chat gpt servers

I like Morning Brew. But 2:08 "No phone service, no Internet, no television", and worse, 2:23 "a technological dark age", is patently ridiculous. The percentage of Internet traffic that never touches a satellite is well over 95%, probably over 99%. And since most "phone" calls today are transported using IP, same is true for voice.

Of course there are people and places that use satellites to transport their data, but those are corner cases. You are arguing that if we take out a company that only delivers packages to people at least 20 miles from their nearest neighbor, no one on the planet will ever get another letter or package again.

To be clear, the Kessler syndrome would cause Serious Problems. Obviously GPS would go away, causing huge issues for travel & farming & such, as you note. We would lose weather satellites, which would also be painful. Etc., etc. But telecommunications in the 21st century is almost all terrestrial based, despite Mr. Musk's attempt to move it to LEO.
