At that rate, I'm surprised the Venitians didn't just buy Constantinople itself from the city's garrison!
It's painful to watch, once great civizations, collapses from corruption.
Truly, the most dangerous enemy for any powerful nation will always come from within.

Rome: I'm gonna reconquer all of the land I once had
also Rome: You give me Dinars, I give you all of my navy's nails

Ironically today I discovered Denars, Dinars, and Denariis are all almost the same thing.

Could you imagine if Manuel Komnenos had lived a little longer? Just enough for his son to be older? Andronikus was an evil traitor.

"Why did the roman empire fall?"

"Corruption."

The Byzantine navy was destroyed during the civil war between Isaakios Aggelos and the strategos of Cyprus, prince Isaakios Komnenos (from the Komneni dynasty), when the later tried to rebel against the central rule of the Aggeloi dynasty (the worst Byzantine dynasty ever). After this conflict, the Byzantine navy basically ceased to exist. For this reason there was no Byzantine navy during the Sack of 1204.

We should look at all these Empires, asking ourselves: 'What drove them to be such filthy fools?'

Does anyone else imagine that if they were the emperor of Eastern Rome at this time they’d introduce loads of reforms, getting rid of all the corruption, then forming a massive army and re conquering the entire Mediterranean?……
