I think you should paint the base boards and window borders a dark emerald green and paint the walls a pure white.

Leave the majority white or off white, paint the groves a pastel color of choice. Then paint the trim and baseboards a darker tone of the same color. Should make it pop without being to overwhelming.

should have got a hammer drill and framed it. Not really that expensive if you do it yourself. Then hang plaster dry wall.
