The next big thing in Indian agriculture is set to come from the Eastern Coast. Seaweed!
The sea is part of Odisha's lives and livelihoods. Odisha is the fourth largest fish-producing state in the country, contributing to 2.33% of the state economy. But Cyclone Fani of 2019 and the ones that followed have had a massive impact on the lives of the fishermen. With the fish population in Chilika dropping by almost 40%, there is a need for an alternate income source for the fishers.
India has the potential to produce around 9.7 million tonnes of seaweed per year*. In 2022, the global production of seaweed was close to 35 million tonnes which was worth about 16.5 billion USD, in comparison India only had a production of 34,000 tonnes. Today, the Indian government has come up with a package of 640 crores to promote seaweed cultivation of up to 1.12 million tons by 2025.
(*According to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute).
Dr Dinabandhu Sahu has led research on microalgae and seaweeds for the past 30 years. He believes algae is the future for coastal India and has the potential to be a great source of income for people in Chilika. But before we get into the potential of commercial seaweed in India, let's start with the basics.
What are seaweeds? and How does it have the potential to be a revolutionary crop for the fishers of coastal India?

This video really help me for understand the importance of seaweed . I really believe that this cultivation help the people live in cost line of India. The cultivation started by Odisha however the other state like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka they follow Odisha because the government has promoting this cultivation and we can also export this product and earn more revenue. The after effect of this cultivation this seaweed has give amazing result are Improve the women empowerment, Improve the Oxygen level in our earth and we can reduce the importing of seaweed. Finally thank you for the informative video and we eagerly waiting something amazing.

I see a great potential for it to be an alternative fertilizer in agriculture industry. We dump most of our agricultural produce into ocean in form of human waste. It's really a great sustainable idea to bring back the lost nutrients from ocean to land again.

Odisha, and other coastal states, shouldn't have to send marine specimens to Delhi for tests.

All, if not most coastal states, should have their own modern facilities dedicated to marine research in particular.

It just makes sense.
