The Cheapest and Best Ham Radio Portable or Mobile Antenna I Have Ever Used

For less than 30 Pounds/Dollars/Euros you can buy probably the most simple, adaptable, durable and easy to transport and store antenna that’s available.

The good old “Tank Whip” - the 9 feet (2.74m) long two-piece CB quarter-wave that works great on 10m and can provide coverage on all HF bands from 40m upwards along with a loading coil / screwdriver antenna system that will punch holes into a small stock whip (around a metre long) that you’d get with such antennas.

I had an actual Larkspur tank whip on my Mini in the mid 80s. Mounted on two ladder bars. Quarter wave on 14 MHz. TS520 radio. Interesting antenna to drive around with. People cruelly said it looked like a dodgem car.

I’m using one with a mat 40 tuner at the moment as a change to my big screwdriver antenna I used stationary mobile and I must say it does everything my screwdriver did but better.
I’ve got it mounted on a base grounded to my van as is the mat 40 ground.
With the mat 40 auto tuning with the 891 it’s easier than the screwdriver to use as well.
Love the videos, keep them coming.

Great video ! Have followed your advice using an ex military whip antenna and completed first tests today with the vehicle parked on my driveway (located in a heavily built-up area). Despite a high background (radio) noise level, using my shiny new FT891, I made several 10m contacts during daylight to Italy, Bulgaria and Russia with signal reports between 5/7 and 5/9 - all on 20W USB! Looking forward to trying a quieter location - possibly adjacent to a body of water. Thanks for sharing, 73`s, M0MOG

The old "102-inch" CB whip. I bought a bunch when Radio Shack (Canada) had them on clearance. Also a bunch of assorted mounts and large springs.
Slight trim for 10m, or use the hardware for other projects. 73 & Cheers.

Some of my best Contacts have been with a 9ft tank whip. No lossy loading and almost impossible to break. I regularly used one back in the late 80s/ early 90s on a Mini Metro. 😂 Bought another at the turn of the millennium to use on a camper but unfortunately i accidentally left it in it when i sold it. I may just have to grab another now i have fresh interest. Thanks Tim
