I’m a life long Protestant. But I have always recognized my debt to the Roman Catholic Church. I see her as kind of the mother church. When my fellow Protestants denigrate her, it’s almost like cutting off your nose to spite for your face. We couldn’t have our expression of faith without Catholicism.

I’d say the letter of pope Clement of Rome to the Corinthians is also an even earlier example of papal preeminence, because he’s rebuking the laity of the Church in Corinth for removing presbyters on their own without going through their bishop, which technically would not have been under the bishop of Rome, so he as pope sets them straight on the matter.

I thought Irenaeus, when he addressed the disagreement of east and west of when we should celebrate easter, he didn’t take any sides but simply asked for east and west to not be divided.

St Irenaeus also said it’s essential for all the churches to be be in full Communion with Rome, and declared the Primacy of the Seat of Peter (the papacy). The guy who said which books are the gospel books, in your Bible. Let that sink in.
