I have done this making horse heads. Good tip is to heat the steel before welding. This way your bead blends and penetrates way better.

When you're chiseling the texture onto the horns, and then hot splitting them, how are you holding the work while using both hands for tools?

Did you weld same size square stock to the angle steel to hold both in the vice?
