The 2022/2023 cohort of Executive Fellows took a tour of the high-speed rail construction sites in the Central Valley. The Executive Fellows Program is a public policy fellowship program that allows graduate students to gain experience in the executive offices of state agencies across California. The Fellows saw investments made by the California High-Speed Rail Authority in Fresno’s downtown and Chinatown and asked thoughtful questions about policies impacting the project. They also heard presentations from the Central Valley Regional Director and Director of Planning and Sustainability at the Authority and toured signature structures.

This video almost made me cry. 30 years ago I was a central California young adult who left for LA for college, a better life, a job, etc. Life along in that part of the world felt hopeless- especially for someone who was a good student. It never really felt like there were good reasons to stay. However… if investments like this had been made back then to help give us some pride in our communities, who knows if I would’ve stayed in LA. It’s great to see smart young adults in Central CA have a positive outlook for their future lives and this cutting edge project is a big piece of that future. Great video!

I'm begging all these smart young people to stay in the San Joaquin Valley. There's no other region of the state where you can have a bigger impact right now

why isn’t more done on the high speed rail by now?

We kinda suck compared to China, or Japan, or Germany, or anyone else. We are literally last place.

This is long overdue. Cars are unaffordable. Subways and high speed rails are so needed in california.

So have any high-speed rail *trains* made progress on it?

When are you guys going to put the train tracks on the completed stuff?

I’m worried that by the time that track and trains are produced, the bridges will have developed cracks and or design flaws might show up. Which is good in that you’re not sending trains over a flawed bridge, however, the lack of utilization of the current bridges, is very sad to see.

2030? 2035?2040? 2045? I can wait. No problem. Im positive.

I'd like to see their enthusiasm when they're interviewed ten years from now and the system is only fifty-percent completed. The ability to board a high speed train in San Francisco and exit from it in Los Angeles won't happen before 2045 at the earliest. Many of these "executive fellows" will be grandparents when the ribbon cutting ceremony is announced. I might or might not still be alive. Only time will tell.

Railfans at large speak some truth that Mr. McCarthy’s House will likely delay funding for this project but unfortunately they also escalate the drama through rough inflation cost projections that “journey into the great unknown”. These in general lead to a narrow viewpoint however and I’d be ok with seeing maybe 2/3 completion in a decade.👍
