‘Far too weak’: Safeguards in government’s Digital ID Bill weren’t ‘sufficiently strong’

Shadow Government Services Minister Paul Fletcher says the Opposition didn’t believe that the safeguards in the government’s Digital ID Bill were “sufficiently strong”.

“So that those Australians who chose not to have a digital ID were not going to be discriminated against,” Mr Fletcher told Sky News Australia.

“It is important that there be legislative safeguards.

“But we felt the safeguards were simply far too weak.”

Mr Fletcher’s remarks come as Australians could soon find getting a credit card or home loan a lot easier, with the government having passed legislation for a digital ID.

It will build on the existing MyGov and could be used by registered private companies to confirm ID without having to submit documents online.

They aren't interested in the safeguards. They are interested in the control of said person.

Authoritarian regimes usually demand that citizens carry ID at all times. Fiercely opposed in Britain after the war, Australians inherited similar hostility. It was seen as one the hallmarks of tyranny. Is digital ID the same thing? It was just jammed through the senate with no debate.

The voluntary, optional, mandatory, will end up being no livelihood or even access to your own money as the bank will need it to be a customer

They say it's so you can have ease of access to services. What the reality will be is that it will be easy for the govt to restrict your access to services if you don't comply with their every demand

Having carried a plastic ID card (complete with electronic chip) for many, many years, one considers this a far better option than a computer based digital ID. The holder of a card has a far greater control over the distribution of one's personal data.
