MORE TIPS!

- Try to get money out at an actual bank instead of free-standing ATMS like Euronet! You won’t run into this issue 9 times out of 10.

- Check and see if your bank in your home country has partner ATMS in other countries that will allow you to bypass the atm fee!

- Wise or Revolut cards allow you to exchange on the cards app before you get to an ATM and takes it out in the local currency.

- Always choose the local currency when paying for things with a card :)

Similarly, always choose to charge your cards in local currency (do not convert) when paying for things anywhere in Europe! You always want your bank/card to do the conversion

Also tip make sure your credit card is one that is not charging for using it abroad. Certain cards targeted towards for more everyday purchase will have a surcharge for every abroad swipe made.

You can also call your credit card free of charge before you leave and notify them that you want that card's currently to use whichever country currency you are going to. No fees and you pay for what you want.
I took different credit cards for different countries. Easiest and cheapest way to travel. For cash conversion on the spot I'd use an actual bank.

Also, for Americans, use credit cards whenever possible. My Amazon Prime card from Chase worked great when I could use it, and there were no additional foreign transaction fees.

another tip, especially good for populated areas:
*ALWAYS* tug on the card reader first to make sure there isn't a skimmer attached

honestly a good tip to do at home as well, but alot of them are on atms commonly used by tourists so it's always good to play it safe

Also, never use the ATMs that are pictured. Look up the ATMs of the local banks instead. If it has a huge sign - near to a scam

Can verify that this is a top-tier tip! My travel agent friend suggested this to me when we travelled to a couple of countries around Europe

I live in Morocco. My husband and I were just talking about this. It's a bit scammy how bad the conversion rate is. It's a financial institution so people don't even realize and just use the ATM's rate 😐

I'm so glad I learned this right before my trip to Budapest last summer!! Me and my friend went to get tattoos there and had to get some cash from the ATM and I didn't realise that my friend didn't know about this so they accidentally had to pay quite a bit more money than me😬

I just use Money Star machines. There’s no fee and it automatically offered the local currency (no conversion). Better than the airport too!

Most of the ATMs around here charge a 10%-12% premium when they do the conversion. That's 100 - 120 bucks on a thousand dollars, and that's after they've taken fees for the transaction.

Always tell your bank you are traveling.
If not your card will be blocked for unusual actity.

Also, take a photo of the front & back of your card and email it to yourself.

You'll have access to the emergency number for your card in case it's lost or stolen.

As a Scot in Croatia, she's absolutely right (those ATMs are so cheeky)
