India’s Big Action Against Maldives? Modi Govt Reduces Aid To Male Amid Diplomatic Row

The Indian government has announced a reduced aid for Maldives amid fraught relations. The Modi government has set aside Rs 600 crore in foreign aid to Maldives, higher than the previous year’s allocation but 22 percent less than what New Delhi actually ended up spending on Male. The allocation is part of the developmental assistance for Maldives announced for the financial year 2024-25. The reduction in aid comes following derogatory remarks made by now suspended ministers in the Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu government.

600cr is still high I feel. Probably an aid bracket of 250-400 Cr would be sufficient. They mustn't feel the need to completely sever the ties and be emboldened enough to hug the Mandarin doll completely.

India should pause any aid to Maldives till their strategy is cleared up. There is no point to support a nation whose Government policies and people, who brought them to power, are increasingly hostile towards the hand that feeds them. I am sure they can fend for themselves through tourism.

I would have advised the govt to donate one lakh as aid, rather than 22 percent reduction. If Miuzzu has any shame or a shrewd of dignity/honor or self respect he should have called the Indian govt to stop its aid completely
