Canon wasn't afraid to dream a little bigger with the 7D II but is a little worth the money?

I shoot sports professionally and have used the 7D mki since it was first launched. It is an excellent camera snd I carry a pair of them. They are built like tanks and have both well exceeded 200, 000 actuations and are going strong. although I am considering new shutters just to be safe. At the time the mega pixel count and fps were ahead of any other APS-C on the market and are still competitive numbers for those that think that they actually matter these days. It's main drawback has always been that its low light performance isn't great which can be a problem shooting in some indoor arenas. I have had to hire 1Dx's when shooting in certain conditions. When the 7Dmkii came out I hired one to try it out, I was so impressed I bought one the following week. Beyond a certain level mega pixel count and fps are not that relevant, clean images at high ISO's and fast accurate focus tracking are what really counts to the working pro. Whilst the MKii is not quite as good as the 1DX at high ISO's it is significantly better than the mki and the new AF is superb which made upgrading a no-brainer for me. One feature I really like which is rarely mentioned is the anti-flicker. Although it slows the camera down, it gives consistent results in florescent and mixed lighting
The 7Di is still a fine camera, I still carry mine and am happy to use them in the right conditions. If you own one and are satisfied with it's performance then you shouldn't upgrade just for the sake of it. If you don't think the 7Dii is enough of an improvement then you are probably not the target market for this camera and should maybe be looking at the 5Diii or hang on for the 6Dii (whenever that happens). Alternatively look at your lenses, when I started shooting back in the film days my mentor said to me "always invest in good glass as that's where the quality is". Whilst digital puts some of the quality back into the body it's still true. I can't tell you the amount of people that I see who keep buying new cameras and still use kit or mid range lenses and bemoaning that there isn't a great improvement in their new camera. If you've never used high quality glass before then you'll be amazed at the performance improvement it gives you. Also, whilst camera bodies will be seemingly forever improved (and will out resolve cheaper lenses) a great lens will last a lifetime and may reduce the frequency that you feel you need to upgrade your bodies. Pro glass may seem like an expensive option but, if you're serious about photography, they will get the best out of your camera and will actually save you money in the long term.

10 years later, the 7D2 still rocks. I love mine.

The 7DII is geared towards sports and wildlife photography just as how their are cameras best suited for portraits and low light. The 7DII is a beast in terms of low light performance as well.

Well, I just upgraded from a 5d. I'm excited, and your videos are always fun to watch. Keep up the great work, Kai

Current US Amazon prices, body only:

7D Mark II - $1799
7D Mark I - $1029

Are the marginal improvements worth another $800? (I mean for the rest of us, who can't blow our life savings on camera gear.) By the way,  7D Mark I used body prices start at $558, which is remarkable.

Anyone else noticed that?

so sweet to hear the only intro again, thanks guys. I would like to caution people with all that water splashing can cause problems with the nobs after a while.

I love your reviews and your fun way of presenting your findings. If I could, I would like to make one suggestion: the background music is often covering your voice and it makes it hard to hear you. If possible to adjust this settings, that would be great. Thanks!

This was somewhat different than a typical DigitalRev video, but I really liked it. :)

I rented a 7D Mk II for my holiday last week. Amazing camera. Makes the 40D I currently have feel so much more ancient.

My money went to the new Nikon D750. Full frame, tilt screen, 24 mp.
For few hundred dollars more it is a much better camera.
Unless somebody invested in Canon lenses, then I rather wait for the full frame 5Ds replacement.

Better AF & 10 fps is not enough. Still poor DR, a little bit better iso performance (3200 is just ok, 6400 looks shitty). Blurred video with moire, but... in 60 fps (wow).
Better option? Used 1D IV or 5D III for this price.
