Dan Mateer .I have had fun today making this jigsaw table and support. It's easy to make and enjoyable.
I had a practice sawing session when I finished and here is what I found.
It cuts square and true in contrast to a band saw. It's easy to shape and cut contours like circles. The support gives it a wider throat which is an advantage over the bandsaw. It has more flexibility in use. It's not a fast tool to use and nor is it slow. You need to take care. One advantage I like is that you move your workpiece instead of the tool. It's not ideal for big piece cuts. I'd still use the jigsaw.
It has one distinct disadvantage. It works against the natural inclination of a jigsaw, that is it cuts on the up and not down. This means the saw dust gathers around the cut and you need to keep blowing it away. You must take great care and hold you workpiece down firmly as the saw wants to push it up and this leads to the blade skewing, bouncing and grabbing. It will give you a fright as well as ruining your cut. A bit of practice and concentration and you soon master this feel.
When am I likely to use it? Well it won't replace my router and table for fine or detailed work. I'd probably use it to make things for the garden where I don't make a few blemishes or faults. It will be good to cut smaller stuff which I will sand to the right shape and size. If you don't have any other type of table then you will get by with this for a while. It's not the perfect tool but useful.

Super great idea. I have do downsize my workshop and my band saw is taking premium real estate. I can survive with this solution. At least for most of what I do. I will try changing the support of the jig saw to the plywood table top. If you use an aluminum or steel plate sitting inside a depression on the table top then you can expose a longer blade.
